Karma Comes Around

I did a ring recovery tonight near a hotel in Lexington for Chris and Erin, who called me after searching for “metal detector rental” in Lexington (a search I deliberately intercept with my website at (http://www.pocketspill.com). I try to intercept those searches because I know people who rent detectors are far less likely to recover items than if a skilled operator is available. I volunteer my time in Lexington whenever possible. I hate to see people waste their time, money and still not recover the item, especially something as special as an engagement ring.

Nice Find Leads to an Even Nicer Experience

It is funny how things work out. A couple of weeks ago, my friend Doug, my wife Diane and Doug’s son Malachi decided to go to an old park that has been good to us in the past, giving up such items as Seated Quarter, many Indian heads, an assortment of Nickels such as Shield, V, and Buffalos.

Historic 1860s Cricket Belt Buckle

My metal detecting had been rudely interrupted by a sudden knee injury. I had missed some prime time detecting and now Winter was fast approaching. I didn’t care, I was itching to get back into it after the operation and rehab period.

I took a short drive to my favourite spot, the site of an early country inn. The bulldozers didn’t leave anything visible on the surface and underneath the area's mineralised soil surface there is a veritable minefield of Victorian era building materials, much of which is slowly rusting away.

A Girl and Her E-TRAC

About a year ago my wife Diane got interested in metal detecting with me and so I got her an X-TERRA 705 and she took to it like a duck to water. She was doing so well I decided to upgrade her to her own E-TRAC. She has made some good finds with it including a beautiful Standing Liberty Quarter and a Franklin Half but this hunt topped them all.

My 1st Gold Ring with Diamonds

My uncle lost his 1949 AAA baseball championship ring he earned after hitting a grand slam against the Braves in Memphis Tn. He lost the ring 12 years ago in his back yard. The 86 year old Iwo Jima survivor (wounded twice on that island) didn't ask me to look for it. I kinda insisted I give it a try.

Paid for My Detector

Last thing I said to my wife before leaving to hunt was (half-joking), “I’d just like to find enough to pay for my detector.” Little did I know I was about to do just that!

I Can't Explain This Feeling

I had a lady contact me to help find her watch that was lost while bailing hay in a padock. It fell off while changing the wraper on a round bale machine.

What a Great Day

The year is 1921. The city, Ottawa, Ontario. The place, The Royal Canadian Mint. Someone says "Dump the coins!" and almost 3.5 million silver Canadian 5 Cent pieces are melted down. The government has chosen to go with the cheaper and larger nickel format for the coming year. But wait, some people have already purchased the 1921 5 cent piece, and about 300 have gone into circulation.

Discovering the Gold Dollar

I was hunting in TTF stock coil auto +3 sens was about 15 I had been there about four hours and found nothing but trash and the skeleton key (eyeball find)bent down to move a piece of wire that my coil was hanging up on and noticed a strange shape.
