How Do You Test for Resistivity?

To utilize the Wenner 4-pin test set, you will place four test leads, or soil pins, into the ground. There are two probes that send an electrical current into the ground, and the two other probes will measure the Earth resistance present. As these are measured, the data logger will keep them stored for your calculations you will perform. It is important to repeat the test a few times for each spacing, as you don’t want any fluke measurements. It is also important to move the probes out into a growing perimeter in increments of roughly 10 feet.

How Do You Calculate Resistivity of Soil?

Now that you have taken all of the measurements from the test kit, you need to know how to calculate the true values. You will know the depth that you have your probes at, you know that pi is equal to 3.1416, and you will know the resistance once you read the test kit’s measurement. Simply multiply 2 (for the resistance equation) by pi, then multiply by your depth, and finally, multiply by the resistance value in ohms.
