For shallow water treasure salvage, one of the most useful tools in our bag of tricks is our Brownie’s Third Lung. Having used scuba every year prior in commercial treasure salvage, I can absolutely say the Brownie’s surface supply is much easier and more efficient than a tank/bc setup. Not only is it less bulky, both on deck and underwater, but in a high energy surf environment (and extremely limited visibility), it keeps the diver tethered to the boat in such a way that they don’t get swept out of the excavation (this has happened to me many times with a scuba setup).

The further benefit of the Brownies is that the diver has the ability to get into difficult-to-reach areas of the underwater terrain where treasure likes to settle, such as deep ledges. In the past, I have had to completely remove my scuba and keep the regulator clenched in my mouth as I crawl into these spots to retrieve coins. With the Brownie’s, I can shimmy any which way I need to put treasure on deck. The unit also barely uses any fuel! A major expense during the diving season is the time and cost of having to buy scuba tanks, drive to the dive shops in the area, and fill them. One gallon of gasoline keeps the Brownie’s Third Lung running all day long and then some! It never struggles to keep up with the oxygen needs of my divers, no matter how much they are exerting themselves. Overall, the Brownie’s Third Lung has made our treasure season much more successful and I would recommend it to any operation, commercial or otherwise.
