White's Surfmaster PI Dual Field Metal Detector

surf dual box

White's Surfmaster PI Dual Field metal detector combines turn-on-and-go ease with unbeatable depth and sensitivity. The Surfmaster metal detector's all-new power circuit reaches new depths, especially on the most prized jewelry - smaller gold, platinum and white gold. Even in the worst beach conditions like black sand. Now, beach and surf metal detection has a new, deeper layer of hunting!

Background: The Surfmaster Dual Field has been enhanced with increased performance over past Surfmaster PI models. It is a high-performance user-friendly metal detector, waterproof to an underwater depth of 100 feet, operating on the Pulse Induction principle. It is capable of extreme detection depth on coins and jewelry in salt water and mineralized ground. In the past, P.I. metal detectors had to be swept very slowly for maximum depth and they had very poor sensitivity to copper-nickel coins and gold. They had manual tuning which was critical to adjust and prone to drift. Most of them used a VCO or fire siren type of audio tone which changed from a low growl to a squeal when a target was detected.

The Surfmaster Dual Field is different. It is the result of over fifteen years of research and development. Our goal was to develop a Pulse Induction metal detector which could match the sweep speed, sensitivity, stability and ease of use of an Induction Balance VLF without responding to wet salt or mineralized ground. The Surfmaster Dual Field may be swept either quickly or slowly with virtually no loss in sensitivity. It was designed to be more sensitive to gold and copper-nickel alloys than to other metals.

Dry Sand Searching: The Surfmaster Dual Field operates on the Pulse Induction principle. Unlike an induction balance detector, it does not require any ground balance adjustments. Most P.I. instruments must be swept very slowly in order to achieve maximum depth, but the Surfmaster Dual Field, does not. It was designed to have a fast target response, so it can be swept almost as quickly as an Induction Balance (VLF) detector.

Minimum Settings - The Maximum of the Results!

I admire my White's Surfmaster PI Dual Field! I use this metal detector in salt water (Adriatic Sea) and in particular I'm impressed how this detector catches small targets such as thin gold rings weighing 0.5 grams, unbuttoned earrings, torn thin chains and bracelets. I search under water 3 - 4 hours every morning and I would like to note that the battery charge lasts for 5 days in this mode of operation, which is very convenient (you do not need to charge the batteries every day). It's an amazing device and I get a real pleasure working with it every day !!! Minimum settings - the maximum of the results!

My husband started detecting when he was a young man spending more time swinging that detector then he spent with me. Finding myself jealous of his new hobby and unbeknownst to him, I cashed in the rings and coins he had found and bought my own detector (the White's Surfmaster PI) Needless to say when he found out I had sold his finds he wasn't very happy. The next day we were at our city park just swinging the day away. Three hours later I was finished - my arm, back and shoulder hurt. Even though I was done after three short hours, I still had found four silver dimes, a handful of wheat pennies and a lot of junk. Thirty years ago, if you could even find a dealer in your area chances are it wasn't going to be a top of the line dealer. We both had the same model of detectors which worked on the same frequency. We didn't know it before we started out that morning but we soon learned that when two detectors are working in the same frequency, they can't work too close together or they will interfere with each others signal. Well so much for that. Modern detectors work on at least two frequencies that an operator can change with the flip of a switch. For a detector to work right, it needs to know what kind of soil it is hunting (in other words it needs to be ground balanced.) With older machines ground balancing was difficult. Today a lot of the machines you can just turn on and start hunting, the manufacturer has preset the machine.

I have been detecting since 1987 and have been through many White's detectors. So one day I decided to try the Surf PI Dual Field. I live in Ohio and we have a lot of rain here, so I figured this would a good machine to use when the weather is unstable. I detected at many lakes and beaches in Ohio and found beautiful gold rings, silver and very little trash. This machine discriminates like a dream - it leaves pull tabs and unwanted items undetected. Like I said about the weather - I went to a local park, in the rain, that dates back to 1895 trying it on land and I got a bleep, bleep so I decided to dig - by the time I found the treasure my whole arm was in the hole, I would say 12 inches. It detected a 1905 barber dime and 5 Indian head pennies in one hole. It had detected an unbelievable depth. Another rainy day I found an old drive-in movie theater to hunt. I went around the swing set, I was on my hands and knees finding silver coins and wheat pennies, again with great depth. I recommend this detector for universal hunting - it is great in the water, on the beach and even on dry land. It's light, discriminates with ease, it has excellent depth perception and the design is very attractive. It is nice to be able to go out to detect on a rainy or cloudy day and not have to worry about the machine getting wet - cause you know the machine is waterproof. My advice, after 22 years, stands firm to what I have said.

Underwater metal detecting. I recently became interested in detection and happen to live at the beach in Maui and wanted a detector that could be used both on land and sea. All my research led me to the Excalibur first but I wasn't prepared to spend the cheese. So I got a White's PI Surf Dual Field because all the experts said I needed the PI because I live near volcanoes. I kept looking for reviews by people that scuba detected and failed to find even one. So here is the first one. I shortened the shaft to make it more maneuverable and set out with a buddy to find whatever. We only found garbage in our 1 hour under the waves, but it was easily detectable and led to the hope that it will be valuable next time. There is a short learning curve... so keep at it. Just be patient and take your time and if anything at least you'll have fun.

I have tried other PIs but just didn't like the tones. Then I traded for a White's PI Pro.It was very easy to operate, a true turn-on-and go machine. I hunt mainly salt water beaches. I dig all targets but I don't mind a bit because the rewards are fantastic. Just 2 controls - both have factory settings until you learn how to use the controls. 10 diamond rings to date. Lots of other gold and silver jewelry. I follow right behind all the "Top-End" detectors and find what they cannot reach. Soon I will get the White's Dual Field and do even better, can't wait. I highly recommend White's beach detectors, mine has paid for itself over and over.
