Minelab Excalibur II Metal Detector with 10" Search Coil
- Product Review (submitted on April 8, 2008):
The Excalibur is still one of the best beach / water detectors I have used. It has found over $1000.00 in coin and about $1900.00 in gold over its 5 year life span. The detector has functioned well and has only required one maintenance repair. It is best used with a "hip" mount which reduces its cross section in the water and its weight on the arm on the shore. The smaller coil provides the user with less resistance in the water and less weight on the shore. The difference between the larger coil and the smaller coil is slight. So pick the one you thing you will be able to live with.
The standard rechargeable battery pack is good, but does not hold charge very well and a few years of use. You can have it "re-celled" with metal hybrid cells at a battery service center such as battery plus. The metal hybrid cells do not develop a memory and will hold a charge two to three times longer than the standard rechargeable cells. Also, the increased power will allow better detecting levels. I classically go for finding coins on the beach but also when temps allow I will go into the water. This seems to be where more gold and jewelry is lost.
