Minelab X-Terra 505 Metal Detector

The Most Flexible and Configurable Treasure Detectors

New 3 kHz frequency option is now available with the new X-Terra 505. The 3 kHz coil gives improved depth on highly conductive metals, such as, silver and copper coins, as well as other large metal objects. (Available in an optional 9 inch size coil.)

In just two decades, Minelab has technologically revolutionized the metal detecting industry. During this period, Minelab introduced ground breaking technologies such as "true automatic ground balance," "Multi-Period Sensing" and "Multi-Frequency." Minelab's passion for solving every-day metal detecting challenges has earned it the reputation of making the best detectors that money can buy!

The X-Terra 505 is Like Having Three Detectors in One

All X-Terra models offers an ergonomically designed three-piece shaft with a new waterproof concentric coil design. Featuring rugged, lightweight construction, the X-Terra's are perfectly balanced for hours of comfortable use in the field.

Each search coil you change on your X-Terra 505 Metal detector creates a new, different metal detector that operates on a different frequency, allowing you to find more treasures. Each coil adds new possibilities to your searching. Search deeper, find gold, and locate targets missed by other detectors. The possibilities are endless! Make two metal detectors from one X-Terra 505! The standard 7.5 kHz search coil is considered to be the optimum coil for all-purpose metal detecting.

Meanwhile the new, higher 18.75 kHz frequency provided by the 9" search coil will find the smaller, more valuable targets such as coins on their edge, thin rings and wedding bands, and even small gold nuggets! No need to buy a second metal detector to find these smaller valuables. Changing coils on X-Terra is like changing detectors. Maximize your X-Terra 505's flexibility with the new 9" 18.75 kHz search coil that you've been waiting for!

Multiple Frequency

The X-Terra Boasts New and Radical Technology to Improve Single Frequency Detectors

This is possible thanks to Minelab's VFLEX technology, which utilizes digital signal processing with highly calibrated analog circuits to create a new class of single frequency detectors. This approach yields superior sensitivity, stability and improved immunity to electromagnetic interference, as well as providing high-resolution target ID even on the deepest targets. For the X-Terra user, this means you'll have the best metal detector available for your target choices.

VFLEX technology uses state-of-the-art digital and mixed-signal components to enhance standard single frequency technology. This effectively replaces most of the analogue circuitry with digital signal processing. The small amount of analogue circuitry still employed has been very carefully designed and calibrated to obtain the outstanding sensitivity, stability and repeatability required to match the performance of the processing in the digital domain.

Dependable performance and improved immunity to environmental conditions such as ground mineralization, electromagnetic interference and temperature variations. Information about which coil is installed is sent to the control box. The detector 'knows' what type of coil is attached and sets the appropriate operating parameters.

Trust your Senses and Let the X-Terra Do the Rest

This radical departure from traditional approaches to metal detector design has been made possible by advances in electronics that power personal digital assistants, cell phones and high fidelity portable audio equipment. For the X-Terra user, this precision means dependable performance and improved immunity to environmental conditions such as ground mineralization, electromagnetic interference and temperature variations. VFLEX technology requires coils that are accurately constructed and calibrated. Every time the detector starts up, the micro-controllers in the control box and the coil establish communication through a digital data link.

The X-Terra metal detector also introduces new graphic display pinpointing to put you right onto the target. The Pinpoint graphic display allows you to accurately dig the target with minimal ground disturbance, ideal for parks, buildings and other sensitive sites, and gives a nice centered response even from large deeper targets.

Every time the detector starts up, the micro-controllers in the control box and the coil establish communication through a digital data link.

Information about the coil is sent to the control box, so the detector "knows" what type of coil is attached and can set the correct operating parameters. This optimizes the performance and also makes the detector (X-Terra 505 Only) "future proof": in that it will be capable of operating with different frequency coils.

I have always wanted to metal detect ,but didn't know what to buy for decent quality at an affordable price. I chose the 505 and so far is pretty good. I probably still need to learn how to use it better to benefit my hunts. But so far I have found tons of clad coins and some jewelry. This is a great buy for your buck and great for beginners also. Another thing is this detector will go about 10 inches deep and can be very sensitive. So reading the manual is a big plus. Otherwise, this is an accurate detector for a good price.

Well, I picked up the Minelab X-Terra 50 on sale for the great price of $299.00. It hits quarters like a beast. I don't think I've ever had a detector that hit quarters as much as this one. They usually read at 45 contrary to what many have written here as 42. On dimes it usually reads at 42 or 36. It reads pennies 36 and occasionally at 45. Nickels hit at around 12 but I haven't found any yet because I've only used it 3 days. Now I have hit many pull tabs and they hit at like around 15 to 45 depending on the depth. So far I've found one wheat penny, one small silver chain, one Armitron watch, and a boat load of quarters and some dimes. I think the X-Terra 50 is a nice machine especially for $299.00.

Since my last review, I've had a chance to "get out there" more often and the X-Terra 50 has not disappointed me. Quarters just seem to pop out of the ground! "42" is always a quarter, "36" or "39" is always a dime. And the nickels I'm finding are great. With my other detectors, I'm sure I've missed (or didn't recognize) the signals. I recently found my first Barber anything; a 1909 dime! Also, I have recovered Mercs and Buffalo's. It won't take long to pay for this unit with my finds.

The main reason for posting another review is to praise Minelab. I recently had to send my unit to them because it started flashing and beeping for no apparent reason. Within nine days, I had it back in A-1 condition! Thank you Minelab for sticking by your product.

The Minelab X-Terra 50 was my first metal detector that has a display and different audio sounds. The weather hasn't permitted me to do a lot of detecting lately, but the few times I have been out I have been surprised and excited with X-Terra 50. I will mention one outing that was fun. I went to a friend's house that I have "hunted out" and had only a limited amount of time. I came away after 15 minutes with a nickel and two pennies. My instincts were correct in that there was a least one nickel that I didn't find. I have never really bothered searching for them. However, with the X-Terra 50, you don't have to miss them as a nickel seems to ALWAYS read a 12 on the read-out.

One of the pennies that I found indicated a depth of 8 inches. Sure enough, I quickly recovered a 1916 Wheatie. This in an area I (and I alone) had searched many times. I'm still getting use to all the features on the X-Terra 50 and look forward to seeing what else it can do.

I tried out so many different brands, prices, ease of operation, etc. Finally, I got a nice Minelab X-Terra 50. When I got the package and put all together, I went outside, turned on the X-Terra 50 for testing with several metal on the grounds, and it was ready to go. Very easy operation and understanding of how it works! Next day, I found a very old dime, 1876! It stayed under four inches deep for many years and the X-Terra 50 found it! I recommend that you go to the metal detector stores and ask them to test and try out to see if you like. Best metal detector ever! Thanks!

The Minelab X-Terra 50 is a great machine. It is as complex or as simple as you want it to be. I couldn't be happier with my choice in detectors. I hunt for coins, artifacts (CW) and will try my luck at gold. This is the best all around detector on the market as far as I am concerned.

I love my Minelab X-Terra 50! With my X-Terra 50, I have found 22 gold and silver rings, jewelry and 25 silver coins in the past two years detecting with it. Of course I have found tons of clad coins with it also - 4723 coins to date to be exact equaling about $125 total! The X-Terra 50 is very easy to learn. The most important thing is ground balancing every time you fire the detector up. Every so often a quick adjustment keeps it in optimum treasure finding mode. The treasure id numbers are extremely accurate also- 36 is always a copper penny or a dime, 42 a quarter or sometimes a 50 cent piece, 9 or 12 is usually a nickel or if lucky enough a gold ring!

The battery life is awesome. I usually get at least 25 to 30 hours with four name brand quality AA batteries. Also the pinpoint mode works very well. I usually can dig a small plug and come up with the target every time, especially on coin sized objects. I love the light weight of the X-Terra 50 as well. Since I try to detect at least 2-3 hours every time I'm out, the light weight of the detector keeps my back and arms very happy. I have even tried a little water detecting with my X-Terra 50. I'm very careful to keep the computer dry, usually covering it with a Ziploc bag duct taped around it. I've even found a couple rings and wheat pennies in the water so far with it.

Overall, for the features, ease of use, and nice price of the Minelab X-Terra 50 I would recommend it to all my detecting buddies. It is just a great little detector!

I bought a Minelab X-Terra 50 after seeing it at a dealer on vacation last summer. I waited and did some internet research before spending money on something that would not work for what I wanted to do. I did that over 30 years ago when I bought a metal detector and could not figure out how to work it. The Minelab X-Terra looks easy to operate and had enough functions to handle most any ground conditions and "treasure" I plan to hunt. When mine came from Kellyco I found it was everything I had hoped for and more -- very easy to setup and operate. I found two coins the first day in my yard. THANKS GUYS for a great product.

It’s spring at last here in the Midwest and I have been just itching to get out metal detecting with my Minelab X-Terra 50. All winter long I make little notes of places I want to "hit" once the snow melts and the time has finally arrived. One and 1/2 weeks ago I had a heart attack and was already out last weekend with my detector. That's the only thing I could think of while "resting". I am so thankful that this metal detector is as light as it is. Even in my recuperating condition, I could be out without getting exhausted. I got the "bug" when I was a little girl and have always dreamed of finding a treasure. I have been detecting now for approximately 4 years and even though I can't get out in the winter months and work 40 - 46 hours a week, I find time to relax doing one of my favorite hobbies.

I basically enjoy searching for coins and relics and have found plenty of each. This is my second detector and it has increased my productivity quite a bit. It is so easy to use. Believe me, I am not a pro by any means, but the panel is pretty self explanatory. When I purchased the detector, I watched the CD that came with it at least 3 times then off I went. I would much rather learn by watching than reading, but the few times I have referred back to the owners manual, I found exactly what I was looking for with ease. My family owns a couple hundred acres of wooded land and I have been very lucky to find an old logging camp that I have been digging for a couple years. Last summer I finally found an old license plate that gave me the year 1934. Oh the fun I have. I wish everyone had a hobby they enjoy as much as I do with metal detecting. We'd all be happy people.

I have been seriously detecting for about two years now. I've tried several detectors some of my detecting buddies use regularly from different manufacturers, liking some and hating others. I decided I preferred Minelab detectors for the depth of finds my friends have found and their glowing reviews of Minelab support. I also appreciated the feedback on some metal detecting forums I frequently read about Minelab products.

I borrowed a friend's Minelab X-Terra 50 for an afternoon hunt at an old park. It took a little getting used to the ground balance feature for optimum searching. After a little tutoring I was off to find treasure! I love the number id readout for different metals. I was about to find quite a bit of clad that first time out and a mercury dime also! After buying my own Minelab X-Terra 50 from Kellyco, I spent all my free time looking for treasure and getting used to my new detector. What a great new hobby! I found dozens of wheat pennies, several silver coins, and lots of lost jewelry including sterling silver rings and one 14K gold man's wedding ring!

About a year later I decided to purchase the 10" DD coil for my X-Terra 50 from Kellyco. What a great investment for increased finds! I started to find deeper coins including one wheat penny I dug at 10" down. I guess you can say I am extremely happy with my purchase of the Minelab X-Terra 50. It is an easy machine to use. Battery life is great - 4 AA batteries last me about 40 hours easily. Finding coins and identifying them before I dig is easy with the very accurate -9 to 45 ID. A great detector for a great price. You got to try one!!

My Minelab X-Terra 50 is my second detector from Kellyco, my first was a 1983 White's 5000 D Deries 2. Now once again I have bought from them and have had the pleasure to talk to one of the guys to let me know which detector to buy, also what I'm going to use it for. It was a Minelab 50, a good choice, and I have been using it for about a year now. I have found a lot with this machine. It is a precise instrument, and you set it at what you want it to do, believe in it and it will produce. I ran it over a place where others could not tell the difference between junk or coins, too much all together and that is what I programmed it to do, it picked out all of the coins that were in the numbers. Mind you, aluminum was not in this as it came from an excavated sight from the late 1800s, could not ask for a better area all ready dug up. Thanks for a great selection and well equipped team.

I received my Minelab X-Terra 50 about 18 months ago and it was easy to use from the first day! I have found coins where others were hunting just ahead of me and my wife. One man wanted to know what kind of detector it was and I offered to let him try it. In less than thirty minutes he found and dug a small pocket knife, a dime and a button. He offered to buy the detector right there and was disappointed when I said no, but I told him where he could buy one and sent the address to him.

Later my wife and I met my brother and his wife in Myrtle Beach and we turned the women loose. It looked like the navy had used the beach for a bombing run! There were holes EVERYWHERE! They sure had a good time filling all the holes and all the things they found and lugged back home was a sight to see. Thank you for helping me choose the right metal detector!

The Minelab X-Terra 50 is a great, low budget performer. I have found rings and coins but not of much value. But then, I don't really care because at my age (76) I do it for exercise and to keep somewhat busy. The controls on this machine are practical and the instructions and CD's were most helpful. This metal detector and its big brothers are certainly worthy of being looked at for the beginner and for the very experienced. I would buy an upgrade in the future without hesitation.

Review by Brian P on March 17, 2008

I decided to buy the Minelab X-Terra 505 after a lot of reading and talking with a few actual owners. It fit my budget, I could see the display without my glasses, it was light and easy to swing, and really fast to set up and use. I took it out of the box, put it together in a few minutes, watched the DVD, then went straight out to my front yard. In less than an hour I found close to 2 dollars in nickels, dimes, quarters, and pennies. This was a greater accomplishment than many long nights at the park years earlier, with an inferior machine.

It had been over 20 years since my last detector, which on a good day I might find a few hundred pull tabs and a penny or two if I were lucky. I was a bit impatient back then, and had a bad detector as well. However, I would watch my brother come home with rings, relics, and lots of coins, but he had a very expensive machine that I will leave unnamed. This was always in the back of my mind over the years when I would drive by a park that was having a big company picnic or get together. I knew if I had a good detector I could come back later and at the very least come out with a pocket full of coins, and perhaps some lost jewelry.

A recent outing after Christmas yielded a pocket full of change from a grass lot that had been set up with a concession stand and Christmas tree sales. Of course there weren't any old coins, but then again I didn't even dig any signals, just the ones where the coin was hidden in the grass. The depth reading on the display really helps with determining that along with the numerical readout. If I hit a high pitched 42 I knew there was a quarter, most dimes give a 36, nickels are strange but most of the time gave me a 12, and pennies are around 30. If it showed any kind of depth I just moved on due to lack of time and desire that day, but still came out with several dollars in change in less than an hour of just walking around picking up money.
