Minelab X-Terra 305 Metal Detector
The X-Terra 305 is a Powerful Gold Detector!
In just two decades, Minelab has technologically revolutionized the metal detecting industry. During this period, Minelab introduced ground breaking technologies such as "true automatic ground balance", "Multi-Period Sensing" and "Multi-Frequency." Minelab's passion for solving everyday detecting challenges has earned it the reputation of making the best detectors that money can buy!
The X-Terra Boasts Another New and Radical Technology to Improve Single Frequency Detectors
VFLEX technology uses state of the art digital and mixed-signal components to enhance standard single frequency technology replacing most of the analogue circuitry with digital signal processing. The small amount of analogue circuitry still employed has been very carefully designed and calibrated to obtain the outstanding sensitivity, stability and repeatability required to match the performance of the processing in the digital domain.
This radical departure from traditional approaches to metal detector design has been made possible by advances in electronics that power personal digital assistants, cell phones and high fidelity portable audio equipment.
For the X-Terra user, this precision means dependable performance and improved immunity to environmental conditions such as ground mineralization, electromagnetic interference and temperature variations.
VFLEX technology requires coils that are accurately constructed and calibrated. Every time the detector starts up, the micro-controllers in the control box and the coil establish communication through a digital data link.
The X-Terra metal detector also introduces new graphic display pinpointing to put you right onto the target. The Pinpoint graphic display allows you to accurately dig the target with minimal ground disturbance, ideal for parks,
buildings and other sensitive sites, and gives a nice centered response even from large deeper targets.
Larger LCD Display
The large LCD control display and intuitive interface allows users to become proficient in a fraction of the time it takes to master more complicated detectors. The X-Terra is smart and will remember your last settings, including saved patterns. It also allows the user to customize settings based on location and type of search with multi-notch accept / reject function and pre-programmed discrimination patterns.

Review by Brandon on February 19, 2018I bought my X-Terra 305 from Kellyco on eBay. It didn’t come with the extra accessories when you order directly from them even though the price was the same. I love how Kellyco does price match and I appreciate the military discount from Minelab. So far I haven’t found any silver but I’m just getting started. For under $300 I don’t think you can find a better detector or one with manual ground balance and adjustable frequency. You can also change frequency by changing coils. Very cool machine.
Review by JB on March 22, 2016This is a great detector with nice features. In 4 days, I found 2 rings and plenty of change. I love it highly recommend it.
Review by Stewart B on August 7, 2014I talked to every company large and small. All the commission sales people at all other sellers, all but one was ready to sell me (a new person at detecting) the highest dollar unit instead of what I thought I wanted. When I found Kellyco Detectors l found the only 100% honest and professional company that the dollar was not all they cared about. When I say I talked to and made notes with all large and small detector companies, I really did. Guess being old I did things in a old school way, not knowing toward the end of searching I would find a company that had been around since 1955. I was about ready to spend a bunch on a detector at another company that was way past what I would have ever figured out! For a company in this day and time to do business in a HONEST and VERY PROFESSIONAL way has to start with the owner! The owner of this company I settled on had to have picked his sales people to be honest first. Very rare and sad to say in this day and time to even find a company like Kellyco Detectors!
The good news after again speaking to all detector companies I could locate, I am very thankful to have found Kellyco Detectors! So what happened after Scott answered all my stupid questions, I bought a lower priced Minelab for around $300.00 and that was still after thinking more money was smarter. Then I tried to buy another Minelab at about a $1500.00 price. Again a salesperson on commission said I would suggest for a second machine to back up a bit to a unit that is a better stepping stone for a beginner. Not $1500.00 but a well rounded Minelab for $900.00 and change. Only because Scott asked me the right questions I will start at a level I now know is the correct way to get started. Again, the second machine I insisted on purchasing myself so when ready it would be here and I would be ready for it. If you get a chance contact the owner and thank this man for his integrity and his honest way he has structured his business! Also I would bet my life all his people follow this man's way.
Review by Will B on April 7, 2014I purchased the Minelab X-Terra 305 after detecting with the mother-in-law's fiancé he currently uses a 705 series and I was impressed. I came from using a 1st Texas Pilot detector which worked surprisingly well for its price. Upon getting the X-Terra 305, its performance is head and shoulders above the Pilot. It assembled easily (I didn't bother screwing the unit to the shaft, it doesn't move at all regardless) and I used it the following day. It's accuracy is outstanding, the manual ground balance is a welcome feature (I prefer to adjust it myself instead of the fixed GB) and the signals are very sharp. It's accurate enough to where switching to the pinpointer mode, the target is typically in the center of the coil anyway. I also appreciate that the volume can be adjusted, something that really annoyed me with the Pilot. The package that came from Kellyco was also fantastic, typically Amazon or Ebay sells the detector alone for $399, and with Kellyco I chose Option 2 ($419) and the audio headphones that came with are awesome, the gator tool works well (I still prefer the Lesche though) and the 1st Texas pinpointer (again, I use the ML Profind) will work well for when we have a friend tag along using my now defunct Pilot. I was having a hard time deciding between the 305 and the Garrett Ace 350, and I feel I made a fantastic choice. This detector will do everything I need it to, and do it well unless I decide to venture into $1,000+ detectors.
Review by Don W on September 27, 2013This one gets five stars from me simply because for the amount of money you will spend on this unit, whether you are a newbie or a pro, it will be used all the time. If you want to get someone into metal detecting and not have them get discouraged, just hand them your 305 and watch them smile. This is by far the best beginners unit on the market. But don't be fooled because it can outlast and out find much more expensive units on the market. It does great as a coin shooter, and finds relics with the best of them in the 700 dollar range. You can change frequency, as well as ground balance very easily. Works great at the beach too. Has awesome depth. I have several detectors that I use, but I will always keep my 305!
Review by Scott S on August 9, 2013I just received my Minelab X-Terra 305 detector. It arrived in great shape, it took less than 15 minutes to put together. I then went out and in a 6x6 grid in my front yard I found $13.00 in change and an arrow I lost worth $15.00. Lets just say I am more than happy with this whole deal and your company. Also, thank you for your recommendation on the detector it is just what I need and you did a great job. I facebooked my 300+ friends with your web site and you as a contact along with my instant success with your recommendation on the detector that met my needs. I think you will have some good future buyers. I will also be placing another order for some gold mining equipment including pans and a very user friendly gold amateur gold sluice so e-mail me if anything you can think of or if a good sale comes up. Thank you very much.
Review by Ray T on May 14, 2013I recently purchased and attached the 18.75" DD coil to my Minelab X-Terra 305. Wow, VERY VERY IMPRESSED! Works through trashy areas and picks up targets even better. Located / acquired a clad 1973 U.S. dime, 1971 quarter and 1973 penny in less than 10 minutes! Detector is less affected from ground mineralization and enables ground balance with super ease. Brings out the full capability of the 305! A super coin unit! For the novice and expert!
Review by Ivan T on March 22, 2013I'm a Gold Prospecting / Relic hunting metal detectorist (coming on 10 years). Used VARIOUS machines ranging from Bounty Hunters, White's, Tesoros and now my first Minelab! Don't let the price fool ya. This machine PERFORMS with the big boys! From ground balancing to acquiring targets with pinpoint accuracy! During my first Minelab 305 hunt (MY FRONT YARD!) I localized and ACQUIRED 2 U.S. Pennies (1992 & 1969) in less than 3 minutes! More to FIND! Thanks MINELAB! And THANKS KELLYCO for your AWESOME SERVICE! 5 PLUS STARS!

Review by Ken R on December 14, 2012A short while ago I was reading a magazine and noticed an add for metal detectors. It had reminded me that two years ago I lost a gold wedding band in my back yard "someplace". I got on the computer and quickly found Kellyco. (I never noticed but they seem to have an add on every website). I called them and they suggested this model for my area. I bought it, got it a few days later. After playing with it for a while, out to the back yard I went. After a couple of days and finding several can tabs, a few pennies, and bottle caps, I FOUND MY WEDDING BAND. Priceless. Thanks a lot.
Review by Travis F on June 29, 2012I ordered my 305 on a Tuesday and got it in the mail on Friday. Nice turn around time Kellyco. I went to my local lawn party grounds last Sunday and searched the dime pitch area where I know others have been and cleaned up on dimes. The machine worked great and I got a 36 target ID on all the dimes and a 32 on pennies.I found $4.85 in about 2 hours. $4.00 of it was dimes. I have not found any jewelry yet but I am having a lot of fun trying. Thanks Kellyco.
Review by JT Foster on September 28, 2010I was really disappointed in this machine. Mine would only give a tone on the first pass of a target and not on subsequent passes. It had poor depth. Did OK on the beach. I am a relic hunter and I was seeking to step up to a more powerful machine than my Tesoro Silver Sabre but this one was a step back. Kellyco is the only place to buy, but this is not the machine to get.
Minelab must have agreed that the X-Terra series needed to be upgraded and now offers the more powerful X-Terra 305-505 and two X-Terra 705’s. Minelab’s Sovereign is recommended for relic hunting.
Review by Mat C on January 2, 2010Just before I left for Pakistan, I purchased an X-Terra 305 as per Steve's advice. Steve recommended this detector since it works better in high mineral areas. Pakistan / Punjab has a 5000 old history where Alexander the Great and Ghangis Khan and many others came to try their luck. It is a land filled with buried treasure. Unfortunately, it did not work out as I intended. It was not the detector. It was the depth. I was told by locals that everything is buried very deep there unlike in the U.S. I really needed a 2-box like detector in Pakistan. However, the 305 worked very well for a 10 inch target. I found one gun shell with 1928 date on it. I am still going to use my X-Terra 305 in the U.S. but I am planning to go back to Pakistan with a detector that could find objects up to 10 feet deep. For the little I used X-Terra 305, I was impressed with it. I give this detector 4 stars.
Review by Scott M on May 18, 2009This new X-Terra 305 is great. So far in little time, I've found 3 rings, foreign coins, and plenty of quarters, dimes, nickels, and even a recent us dollar coin. I also have an X-Terra 70 and I like this X-Terra 305 more. It IDs very accurately, it has good depth and is great on batteries. It’s light and very smooth to use. Minelab drastically improved the old X-Terra 30 with this 305. I highly recommend it!
Review by Jens K on April 20, 2009I've had some good luck with the Minelab X-Terra 30. I have found 3 Wheaties 1935, 1940, 1955 and I've found a 1952 Roosevelt dime and over $4.00 in modern change! I've had it now for 2 weeks. It's the X-Terra 30 model and I've found coins 4 inches deep already with no problem. This is a great detector. I've also found a silver plated police badge 7 inches deep!
Review by Matt P on October 3, 2008I am very pleased with this metal detector. Though, as a relative newcomer to the hobby, I do not have much to compare it to. My detecting experience is limited to a machine my grandfather gave me many years back that I amateurishly used to play with (it was a very low end detector), and in anticipation of taking this hobby a little more seriously, I rented a White's Prizm IV for one weekend to make sure detecting was as exciting as I remembered. Admittedly, it was the Prizm rental that got me hooked for good on this hobby--my second beep was a silver 1948 dime! With that said, the X-Terra is better than the Prizm and based on my interpretation of reviews, it is about the best detector for the money in this range.
Here are some pros I've observed in the past two weeks:
Set-up was easy. The process of setting up also gave me a chance to review the quality of the individual pieces, which I give very high quality marks to. I was detecting in minutes (low leaning-curve), and had a several coins in my pocket in the first 15 minutes.
I am really thankful for the large numerical display. Because of the size of the numbers, I never have to stretch down for a closer look (like I did with the Prizm), and the numbers are almost always indicative of what's in the ground. If it's a 40, I feel confident there's a quarter down there. The only time I've noticed the numeric ID is not aligned with what would normally indicate a specific coin or metal is when the object is very deep or is extremely corroded. In the latter case, the detector is still doing its job perfectly--the conductivity of the metal has changed.
The target discrimination is great. I've hunted primarily in parks so far, and my X-Terra 30 will pick up coins next to trash with no problem. I've gone down for objects that were buried with trash based on the independent signature of the keeper object. I'm not sure of the technical term for this--it is very precise in outlining the object.
Review by Dan E on August 2, 2008I have had the X-Terra 30 for 2 years. Assembly and operation out of the box are extremely easy. Resetting locked out targets is a little tricky, done during power up. I like that no strap is necessary on the arm rest. It is very light. Target ID is somewhat useful. Quarters are always a 40, Dimes 36, nickels 8, pennies a 32 or 36. Tabs foil 8-12. I prefer to hunt for coins. A ring now and then is a real plus. I can squeak an hour in now and then or 10 minutes at a park on a trip and want to get a few finds. I don't dig deep, usually an inch or two. Being in Montana, I've ended up going shallower as there are so many stones and rocks. Ground is mineralized.
I've owned a White's 4900, Fisher 1266X, Whites IDX and now the X-Terra. The X-Terra works similarly to the IDX. Pinpointing is far too vague, with a really goofy tone and screen system. Soup can size. Electrical interference like power lines mess it up. There are not enough divisions on the discriminator. The higher models may cure that. I do better with it in the Midwest, which has great soil, but as with the 1266X, I feel I need some form of ground balancing. Sweep speed is not fast. Listen for a solid beep with no falsing or chatter. Raising the coil or re-hitting the pinpoint button while over the target helps reduce the target size. Most unusual find by 2 persistent kids of mine was a crochet hook. Also, I found a track medal which I returned. I am still searching for the perfect detector. This one seemed a little overpriced for its performance.
Review by Herman S on April 14, 2008I have been metal detecting for over thirty years and have used machines from most manufacturers.
I would recommend the X-Terra 30 machine for just about any level of MD'er as it makes a great unit for the beginner or a veteran who doesn't need all the bells and whistles. While I believe almost every major maker of machines has very good and probably comparable models available on their higher end units, most drop off on performance considerably on their mid and lower end machines.
The X-Terra has all of the performance of the top of the line machine but doesn’t have all the modes available to this. This might seem like a big drawback unless you're basically using it for coinshooting or jewelry hunting like I do and most other MD'ers probably spend most of their time doing. If you are gold prospecting or spending a lot of time in or around salt water, it might be better to step up to the X-Terra 70 or to buy a machine that specializes just in that.
Most of the machines I have used over the years have had some strengths and some weak points but I don't think I have ever used a machine that does everything overall as this one. It does a great job of masking out unwanted iron and it is extremely rare to be bothered by hot rocks, both of which are fairly common here in Ohio. It is fairly simple to use if you just make sure you get a repeatable signal and it sees through trash fairly well.
I had planned on buying a different machine from a major manufacture that was on sale but after talking to a sales representative, who was familiar with this area, he suggested this and what a great call that was. After trying it out on some coins that are buried in my yard and seeing that the number scale and depth reading seemed very accurate, I went out to an old farm house with a friend for a real test. I found a Standing Liberty quarter, a gold ring, and a few Wheaties at a good depth while my friend was limited in his finds.
Review by Josh K on April 11, 2008I have always been a history buff, fascinated by antique relics and old coins. I've read many stories of people finding coins and hidden treasures all over the place, and I wanted my chance! I decided it was time to get a metal detector. After much research, it was clear that the price, quality, and technology of Minelab X-Terra is unprecedented.
Within the first hour of use, I had already mastered the discrimination and pinpoint functions, as the electronics are extremely easy to use. One simple Accept / Reject button filters out unwanted materials from your detecting area. I found two quarters and a penny in my front yard. One signal showed all five bars for depth. I dug about eight inches deep only to find nothing. I decided to try a little deeper and then found a piece of scrap metal. It was deeper than eight inches, proving the amazing sensitivity of this detector. The 7.5 kHz coil with VFLEX technology is very precise. The pinpoint function, with its graphical indicator, was dead-center over the object every time. I found the sensitivity adjustment to be very helpful as I detected in various environments, especially in those with any interference. The detector length adjusts for comfort and is very light, therefore, my arm never tired.
Now, more than ever, I get excited when I happen to find an old abandoned house or historical area. For the amount of thrill I have experienced with this detector thus far, it has easily paid for itself. This detector is great for both beginners and experienced hunters alike. You get the functionality of more expensive units all in one easy, simple-to-use piece of equipment. I would definitely recommend this detector to anyone.
Review by Donald B on April 1, 2008After months of mulling over purchasing a metal detector, I finally decided on the Minelab X-Terra 30. I imagined the excitement of finding something valuable like a diamond ring, a rare coin or a gold necklace. What I found with my new metal detector was something far more valuable--a hobby that allows me to bond with my 33-year-old daughter.
"Dad, it's here!", my daughter exclaimed with delight. I believe that she had been looking forward to the arrival of the metal detector almost as much as I was. I had never really seen her so excited over one of my hobbies. Woodworking had never interested her and mechanic work... forget it. This was totally different. She ripped open the box and started to examine all the contents. As I started to read the manual, she asked, "Well, are we going to take this out and give it a whirl?" I laughed with amusement and explained that I needed to at least read the manual. I was very surprised to learn just how easy the X-Terra was going to be to use. Finally I was ready to set out on a treasure hunt.
With my new X-Terra and digging tools in tow I started out the door. "Hey, wait for me!" my daughter shouted. I couldn't believe that she would venture out into the cold just to treasure hunt; however, she bundled up and headed out with me. As we searched I explained to her how the X-Terra would signal when a metallic substance was detected and how the pitch of the sound would give clues as to what type of metal was detected. Even as I spoke the detector picked up something. "WOO HOO!!! We found something!!", she shouted. I stepped back and my daughter began to dig frantically, anxious to unearth our first treasure. I watched with amazement as she smiled while searching though the dirt. Seeing her so excited at the prospect of finding "treasure" took me back many years ago to when she was a child. I could just see her bouncing through the house on Christmas morning with that same look of excitement as she tore open her gifts.
Review by Michael J on March 17, 2008I haven't had a lot of chance yet, but making sure that this year, I will do a lot more. Still learning all the ways to make this machine work for me. I believe up here in Alaska I didn't get the right machine, I have passed over several gold pieces, both chains, rings and nuggets. I have no trouble with silver or clad coins etc. I know that I do not have the top of the line machine, and am starting to work on getting this one set correctly. The one thing I do know is there is lots of opportunity here to make some great finds. I have a friend that has a White's, and he has been finding some nice nuggets up to 5dwt. and one 3/4 oz. We have several old homesteads that went down in the earthquake in 1964, and I believe there will be some finds there. Also there are many deserted old mines, and mines where the old miners passed on and these have never been hunted out with a metal detector. Being an old time Alaskan I have been around a long time and know of places where no one else has been as yet. Of course with the sheer size of Alaska, there will always be places to search. Just finding the right equipment for the job is what I need to find out. Without knowing anyone else that has this type of detector, I now know I should have done a lot more research. I have only taken this one out times and only found about $6.00 in clad coins. Passed over several others, and small nuggets. Well maybe this year, I will do a lot better, with practice of course. Would I recommend this detector to all? I don't think so at this time anyway. I bought this Minelab, X-Terra 30 from you last year, I know it is the lowest cost of the Minelabs, and I still have a lot to learn.
