Bounty Hunter VLF Treasure and Gold Metal Detector

The VLF Metal Detector will Help you Get Started Finding your Treasure,
without Spending a Fortune to Get It

What is a VLF Detector?

vlf face For over 50 years metal detectors have been made with many different kinds of circuitry to transmit and receive signals. Many of these are considered obsolete today. Very Low Frequency (VLF) types of detectors are by far today's most popular choice. The VLF name comes from the operation of this detector in the Very Low (radio) Frequency spectrum of 3-30kHz. Most VLF detectors operate no higher than about 15 with the majority operating near 5kHz. Because VLF's can be designed with circuitry that's not bothered by the disturbing effects of iron minerals (which have a tendency to confuse other signals and falsely indicate metal targets), circuit gain can be made higher; thus, improving sensitivity where smaller targets can now be detected and greatly increase detection depth.

VLF detectors manufactured in the USA are controlled by strict regulations which protect the buyer. Many detectors imported into the U.S. are not regulated and can be very disappointing by reading false signals and lacking depth in spite of the claims to be a VLF detector.

We have two children and love to camp - a couple of years back we bought a very inexpensive metal detector at a discount store. It worked for a while - then stopped, we replaced batteries and even took it to a local electronics repair shop. They were unable to find the problem. I suffered a stroke in 2002 and have since been on disability -- so money for extras is in short supply. I know the kids would love to have a quality metal detector to "treasure hunt" again --- I feel that this activity is great fun and would bring much joy to our children.

I found this metal detector very simple to use. The controls and the screen gauge were both easy to figure out. The discrimination is very limited though. You just turn a knob and go. What I have found with this detector is surprisingly good. I found an 1860’s musket lock plate and hammer. I also found an 1870s crotal bell (jingle bell) and hand forged relics from the 1800s. I have also found modern coins and a few wheat pennies. For the price of the detector, it has good coin depth, 5 inches or so. For a beginner like I am, I recommend it. So if you want to try out this hobby but do not want to break the bank, I recommend this detector. Overall, I give this detector 4 stars for its depth and price.

I got my detector for Christmas. I couldn't wait to get out there & start finding things. The middle school was close so I started my hunt, I didn't find much, about .75 cents but that was because you can't really dig up school property so I had to stick to the gravel areas, but still lots of fun. The metal detector works well but I'm still having trouble with the depth reading - sometimes it says 7in but is actually only 3in, still it's loads of fun. I find that after detecting for a while it's hard to take your eyes off the ground or get the beeping out of your head. I also took it to the beach & detecting in fine sand is less work than constantly digging in clay soil, therefore more fun. I bought a pinpointer to help my find things faster but haven't had much chance to really get out & hunt due to it being winter.

Howdy, just wanted to share one of my favorite hobbies with you all, it's treasure hunting. I have a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 I bought from a local department store in town, it does a good job targeting in on coins, jewelry and metal relics. I found a civil war button, couple of musket balls,1944 fifty cent piece, lots of quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies, a silver and turquoise ring, silver cross with two white beads and Indian head pennies. I've got a handful of them now. The best one I have is an 1897 in great condition. I found a thin gold chain although it was broken I still keep it, the weight nowadays is soaring up $$$$ so I save all the stuff. When I was a teen I used a detector, I don't recall the name but it was a heavy one that took a bunch of batteries and had a gauge with a needle that moved over if you crossed over something. I did not have much luck then, but nowadays there is so much modern mechanics it can tell you exactly where an object is, even what it is and how far down to dig. That's amazing. Makes it so easy you know when you go out there's no doubt you will bring something home every time, unless the weather prohibits you. I just love going out to the wilderness and finding where cabins once stood and checking around the grounds, or going to public places after a big fair, just anywhere is fun to check you never know what's there till you check it out. I really enjoy having a Bounty Hunter, it's lightweight and has a curved handle to hold it easier. It also came with a coil to find gold that's a nice bonus, plus a video how to use it ,and a bag to wear on your waist with a shovel too. I have been a happy hunter for the last 2 years and hope to be for many more. - Karen in wild and wonderful West Virginia.

I like to search for coins. Would like the discrimination to be better and tell the depth of the items if possible. I would recommend to others if they are interested in finding items in the ground like coins, belt buckles, buttons, etc. I would be interested in a detector that can work under water or above ground. It would be nice if accessories were offered like a cover for the bottom of the detector. Perhaps a tool belt for a digging tool and pouch for finds. Also give ideas where to look for items and various suggestions. I am not sure if I am satisfied with my Bounty Hunter detector, it seems to go off on anything and when I start digging there is nothing there. I used the method of taking a handful of dirt and testing it with the metal detector then discarding it if it did not go off then starting again repeating the process many times only to find nothing. I am waiting for spring to try again when the ground thaws and it quits raining and snowing. At that time I will have more experience with the detector and be in a position to have a better opinion of the metal detector and perhaps be able to give some opinions as to how it can be improved. The Bounty Hunter detector is surprisingly light which makes it easier to carry and use for long periods of time so this is an important feature to have.

I have used my BH VLF on the Oregon Trail in Nebraska, and found all kinds of interesting stuff with it. Plus my young daughter once borrowed it and used it to find a gold wedding band that had been lost in some mud at a remote beach. Incredibly she found the ring, even though this is the first time she had ever even used a metal detector. I would like to own a more modern detector even though I have had a lot of fun with this old one.
