Garrett AT Pro Metal Detector

Standard and Pro Audio Modes

The Garrett AT Pro Metal Detectors provides treasure hunters with two beneficial search modes to accurately pinpoint buried targets. The Standard Audio Binary Mode will send a full-strength audio signal regardless of the target's depth. This mode is preferred by the vast majority of treasure hunters who like either the on or off style of response.

For a setting similar to that of the ever popular All Metal Mode, Garrett Metal Detectors has included a proportional (Pro) Audio Mode. The Pro Audio Mode allows the user to "hear" the properties of the target through subtle changes in the tone. The user is then able to determine the buried target's size, shape and depth. As a bonus, it is able to detect adjacent targets which allows for a quicker recovery time.

AT Pro Target Response

Depicted in the above diagram is the sustained audio response in the Standard and Pro Audio Modes. The metal detector using the Standard Binary Audio Mode provides a sustained tone for both the shallow and deep coins. Comparing that to the metal detector using the Pro Audio Mode, the shallow coin emits a strong signal while the deep coin emits a weak signal.

AT Pro Target Info

The above diagram shows that the Standard Binary Audio Mode produces a solitary strong signal from both coins. The Pro Audio Mode on the other hand emits an uneven signal that plateaus on each adjacent coin. This lets the user know there are two separate coins next to each other.

Tone Roll Audio Mode

The Tone Roll Audio Mode was designed by Garrett to help treasure hunters better identify targets, especially those containing iron. While in Standard Binary Audio Mode, a metal detector will emit a solitary sound which will be based on the targets properties. Tone Roll Audio, on the other hand, emits a tone that will vary as it is swept across the target. This variation in tone gives the user more information on the target and allows them to make better judgments on what to dig up as well as what to leave in the ground.

Bottle caps, steel washers and other trashy metals emit high tone responses on a Standard Binary Audio Mode. This is because the shape the metal can sometimes produce readings as if it were a coin. By using the Tone Roll Audio Mode, these types of metals will emit a non-identical sound which will vary from low to high and then back to low again. As it's shown on the diagram to the right, the Standard Binary Audio Mode only emits one high tone while the Pro Audio and Tone Roll Audio Modes produce a sound that varies as it crosses over the target.

AT Pro Water

All-Terrain Versatility

The Garrett AT Pro Metal Detector was designed for treasure hunting in wet, muddy, dusty and humid environments. The device has built-in waterproof housing and connectors that are covered against the elements. It can be submerged in water as high as 10 feet to search along river, shorelines, piers, docks, or even swimming holes.

NOTE : Waterproof headphones (optional item shown in photo to left) must be used if the headphones are immersed in water. Standard headphones provided with AT Pro can not be submerged.

High-Res Iron Discrimination™

Iron discrimination on the Garrett AT Pro Metal Detector can be set by using the (+) or (-) IRON DISC touch-pads. The settings can go from one to forty levels to easily ignore iron trash and find the treasure that you're looking for.

Digital Target ID System

The Digital Target ID System on the Garrett AT Pro Metal Detector includes specific targets values to quickly identify what's buried in the ground below. The screen identifies targets on screen with a number between one and ninety-nine. The most ferrous targets are labeled as a one with the most conductive targets (thick silver) registering closer to ninety-nine.

The brilliance of the Target ID on the Garrett AT Pro's touch-pad is that it can show the precise location of a silver coin up to eight inches in depth. The target ID number on the graphic to the right corresponds with the Upper Scale Target ID Cursor.

AT Pro Digital ID Face

Iron Audio™

The problem with iron objects cluttering a field is that they tend to camouflage the valuable targets and create signals that appear to be good. The Iron Audio feature on the Garrett AT Pro allows the user to "hear" any iron that the device is discriminating. This gives the user a greater understanding of what is below their feet and avoids any unnecessary digging.

The Iron Audio feature lets the user adjust the range on the midpoint to include all targets that are above a certain point of discrimination. This, in effect allows the user to adjust the cut-off between a trash target with a low tone and those with a mid tone.

This is the standard division of low, mid and high tones on the Garrett AT Pro. The Iron Audio on the above graphic is set to OFF.
On this graphic, the iron discrimination is set to 20. Targets that are below 20 are made silent when the Iron Audio setting is OFF.
The targets in this graphic to the right 20 are heard as a low tone when the Iron audio feature is set to ON. The mid tone is now expanded down to 20.

A Great Metal Detector

Review by Terry on October 22, 2017

I have to say it's a good metal detector. I'm still learning to use it, but not bad for my third time out, 2 Mercury Head Dimes and 3 Wheat Back Pennies. I have also found a lot of other newer coins. I can't complain.

My AT Pro Comes Through For Me Today

Review by Jeffrey on October 14, 2017

I have been pounding the ground with my AT Pro for about a year now upgrading from an Ace 350. The AT Pro has put me on a Seated dime,a few Barbers,a few Merc's and today...finally...it banged out the dime that that had been eluding me. A 1951D Roosevelt was snatched from the earth. The AT Pro was finally able to put me on the newest of the silver dimes that had for me, been the hardest to find. You just can't go wrong when you buy an AT Pro!

Excellent Detector with a Few Minor Flaws

Review by David on August 19, 2017

Easy to use and spans the gap between basic detectors and professional detectors. I have found a lot of "treasure" with my AT Pro - even in heavily trashed areas. For thorough searches, a good set of headphones are a must. Here is one issue with the AT Pro, the detector requires headphones with a waterproof connector. The set supplied with the AT Pro are not waterproof and are not comfortable with the cord being too short. Changing batteries is also an issue with the cumbersome waterproof battery pack and almost invisible polarity markings. The connectors to the detector head are difficult to access if you have large fingers. Otherwise, the AT Pro meets all of my requirements for a general purpose metal detector. PS: Garrett or third party suppliers should make an inexpensive waterproof to 1/4 " adapter!!

Unbelieveable Machine!!!

Review by Chris on August 14, 2017

I started the hobby with the Garrett Ace 250 and just recently upgraded to the AT Pro. I have been back to a park that I hunted quite extensively with my Ace 250 and I was finding things that I had walked over!! Absolutely love this machine and glad I bought it!! Cannot say enough good things about the AT Pro. If you are looking for a great machine look no further!!!

Finds in a Hunted Out Location

Review by Rob on June 25, 2017

I love this detector! I called my friend that owns property with a house that was built in the 1860's to see if I could search his property. He said the land had been previously searched by 4 other metal detectorist's, of which 2 where "hard core" and said the land was hunted out and filled with trash but I was welcome to try. In 3 hours I found a one cent coin from 1848, a sterling silver spoon or fork handle patented in 1876 with an amazing griffon design, a 5 cent trading token and a yet to be identified copper coin or token along with assorted buckles . And I've only searched 2 acres out of 20. I love the discrimination options and the ability to change frequencies. The nearby power lines were really making the machine chirp and bing like crazy until I read the manual and changed the frequencies. After that, it was like the power lines weren't even there. I have another friend with property dating back to the 1850's that's reportedly never been searched. I can't wait to to use the Garrett AT Pro there.
