Here at Kellyco Metal Detectors, we have had a number of customers ask about the difference between various metal detector coil covers, and even whether or not they are necessary. So we put together a few points about these items to help you decide what options are best for you and what to look for in a coil cover.

Features to Look For in a Metal Detector Coil Cover

While optional, a coil cover will add longevity and versatility to your metal detector. A coil cover should match your detector to ensure that it fits. This is an important consideration since there are numerous metal detector brands out there to choose from. Many metal detecting hobbyists do not believe the cover has any function other than to protect the coil from dings and dents. An even greater and more common danger to detector coils is the sand, dirt and debris that can easily get inside. This can hinder, damage and destroy your detector's sensitivity over time and even ruin your coil. Coil covers should be:

  • Durable
  • Lightweight
  • Properly fitted to your detector
  • Well suited to the terrain and your searching style

Different Coil Cover Strategies

Many metal detection hobbyists prefer to purchase two or more inexpensive coil covers. This way, they have backup covers when they need them, and they are less inhibited about using tape to seal the cover, to prevent dirt and sand from getting into the coil.

Finally, you do have the option to run your searches without a cover. Some treasure hunters and even military mine detecting professionals say that a metal detector may be more accurate and sensitive without a cover. Our recommendation is that if sensitivity is at a premium value to you, and if you conduct your searches in areas where loose dirt, debris and wind are not a problem, then it may be okay for you to go without a coil cover.

For everyone else, though, we recommend using a cover as it will protect your investment and help you to enjoy many more hours of metal detecting than you might without one.
