My First Standing Liberty

So I went back to this new, old house I have been hunting. Standard stuff, old pull tabs, copper washers and can slaw, I look for reasons to dig, not for reasons not to dig. Mixed in with the trash were a couple of pennies and clad dimes. I had a feeling about this place and knew there was (is still) old Silver here. Well about 30 minutes in I hit this huge high tone, you know the one that says the coin is only an inch deep OR an aluminum can 11 inches deep. I checked with my pin pointer and boy it was right at the surface. I had hope because I had dug a '29 Merc and a '43 NewZealand One Shilling the previous day. So, I dug a rea...

The Hunting Bug

I am only 11 years old. I begged and begged dad to take me out for a hunt as I now have 'the bug'. 'Oh alright', was his response. 'Yessssssssss' was mine. We got to a very old spot that I have found many coins at including a 1925 Florin. First I got a nice silver bangle. But then, near an old slab of concrete a nice signal - dug a little and BAM a 1917 Australian Shilling, beautiful. Then we went very close to an old fence which produced a beautiful 1896 Threepence, a 1952 Penny and sitting right on the surface a 1948 Half Penny. Then dad said that he'd had enough so I said 'can we dig one more?&...

Jump For Joy

I was coin hunting Wednesday 4/6/2011 with my X-TERRA 705 and I had found 7 pennies, a nickel and a dime and moved around to another section of the lot I was hunting when I got a tid of 38 and 40. I pinpointed it and proceeded to dig my penny. When I got it out of the ground I was surprised to find it wasn't a U.S. penny, but what looked like a bracelet with a coin or madallion attached. I cleaned off the dirt and the date 1758 stuck out like a sore thumb. I was jumping with joy. I cleaned it off with water and took a pic of the item and posted it on finds treasure mall and the next day another detectorist had done some research on it...

Don't Forget Your Own Backyard

I am the thrilled new owner of a Minelab X-TERRA 705. I received the machine on March 15th and the ground was still a little frozen here on long island but I couldn't wait so I started detecting in my own yard. My house was built in the early 70's so I didn't expect to find much in the way of old coins or such but I did get a great surprise! What appears to be a 1950's Hurley tractor and a 60's Tootsietoy Dump Truck! I can’t tell you the feeling that metal detecting has brought back into my life! It makes you feel like a kid at Christmas time all over again!

Like a Completely New Site

I discovered the same civil war camp twice, well it seems like I have. After finding a camp in 2005 my buddy John and I had hunted it hard ever since. After the relic finds slowed down I decided to buy a X-TERRA 705, and added the medium freq. coil. I hunted the same site my first day with the X-TERRA. It was like a completely new site, my first twelve holes were nice dropped 54 caliber and 36 caliber Teradrops.

Digging Pays Off

Well my story starts in some woods where everyone had told me this places was pounded to death, but I had some time to kill so I figured maybe, just maybe the 705 could find something... Well after about a 20 min hunt in the hot sun, I got a signal, faint but it was there, started digging and digging and I dug some more (12 inches in the dirt). Finally I could see silver, at last something to show for all that digging... It was a 1773 half Reale. I was so excited I almost quit to go show it to everyone, but I decided to stay a few more min and it paid off big time... A pair of navy cufflinks that I am told are from the war of 1812. I'...

Finds of a Junior Detectorist

My name is Max, I am 11 years old and I developed an interest in metal detecting about two years ago. I purchased my first metal detector with my Christmas money, a Minelab X-TERRA 705. On my first outing with my dad, he took me to a new spot. I had high expectations for this spot as it is very old. As I stepped out the car, I got a nice signal; I dug it and saw a small silver coin. I picked it up and it turned out to be a 1909 English threepence.

360 and Still Counting

Last week I had the opportunity to hunt on a family member's property for the first time. Their property is adjacent to the first house built in their community which dates back to sometime in the 1700’s. I started out by finding two wheats along with a few other pennies from the early 70’s. I eventually pulled up my first Mercury dime, a 1941. I couldn't have been more excited because I've only been detecting for just over a month and this was the oldest silver that I had found. About 10 minutes later I got a fairly weak signal but strong enough that I felt I should dig it. As I was going through the plug I saw ...

Minelab X-Terra 705 Civil War Eagle Breastplate

On the day of December 31, 2013 I went to an old house that was built in 1925 to see if I could pull out any more relics with my Minelab X-Terra 705. I had recently found a 1927 Standing Liberty Quarter that was in great condition at this homesite. I came back to the site after a month because I had run out of other new spots to hunt. I received a signal that was about 6 inches beneath the surface and I started to dig. I then realized that I had found a Civil War breastplate instead of what I thought was a mason jar lid. This was the greatest find I had in my whole detecting career.
