Epic Street Tear Out

It was getting late and we were heading home from a very long day of detecting on unproductive grounds. On the way home we noticed a street tear out in a historic part of town. This part of town was in a very rural area but during the turn of the century it was a major stop along the railroad. When the new highway was built, the town was bypassed and somewhat forgotten. Having struck out earlier in the day we decided to give it one last shot in hopes of avoiding a complete bust. The rest is history.

Smallest U.S. Coin

I was hunting an area that used to be a Stagecoach stop back in the 1800's. I was hunting for about 30 minutes when I got a loud 7 inch hit. The TID hit 12/10 12/12. So I was hoping for a V nickel. After pulling the plug, I used my PRO-FIND 25 to locate the elusive target. Finally finding it, and getting the tiny target in my hand, I swiped away the soil. To my amazement, the target was gold colored. It was a gold coin! An 1852 $1.00 gold piece. The CTX 3030 is a Beast and never ceases to amaze me. I never leave home without "THE BEAST".

CTX 3030 First in the Field

Wow I am loving the CTX 3030 experience! A new field opened up for us this past week and I was anxious to give the CTX 3030 it’s baptism in field hunting. The first hunt was with my wife Diane and we were finding a lot of neat relics and enjoying that but the first old coin was eluding us. About two hours into the hunt that all changed. I got a decent 12-23 signal and I was thinking as I dug the target it was probably a flat button but to my surprise in the dirt I saw a coin. First thought with those numbers maybe a fatty Indian but when I cleaned a bit of the dirt off I could see the Flying Eagle! That was a first for me.

One Ring Lead to Another

My wife works with a lady who's brother (Harry) has a friend that lost a gold ring in a pond in a local neighborhood some 40 years ago skipping stones. We were called to give it a shot. The trashy pond has since "dried" up, well kind of, there isn't any standing water but, with every scoop we took the hole filled up with muddy water. After about 2 hours of hunting and sloshing around we decided to wait until the area either dried out some more or maybe when it freezes this winter.

A Seated in the Gloaming

I have used the E-TRAC for 3 years and have been very pleased with it and my results, I recently decided to go to the CTX 3030 and I can say I am pleased immensely. I can vouch that the CTX 3030 is just not a waterproof E-TRAC but a wonderful machine based on a whole new platform.

Missing WW2 Bomber

I have been an aviation archaeologist specialising in WW2 aircraft for over 30 years now. Whilst researching for a book 10 years ago I came across an incident that took place over Shepreth in Cambridgeshire. This involved the crash of a B17 Flying Fortress Mk1 one of 20 sent over from the USA as part of Lend Lease Agreement. This plane broke up one chilly January morning in 1942 and I was never really able to pin point where. Recently a detecting colleague mentioned that he had heard of a B17 crash about 1.5 miles away from Shepreth but again no real idea of where.

Broken Mirrors are Not Always Bad Luck

Over the last few years my friend Steve has found several fragments of a Roman mirror. Firstly his Safari found the initial pieces and then he borrowed my CTX 3030 a few times that found some more. This year the field was ploughed deeply first time ever and the spot where the mirror pieces came from revealed a small very smashed up Roman cremation burial.

23 Gram Gold Ingot Viking or Bronze Age

I started out on a normal days detecting, or so I thought!! First good signal turned out to be a very worn Elizabeth hammered penny but they all count and I was up and running. I headed up the field finding a worn rose farthing on the way amongst lots of other bits and bobs! Soon it was time to head roughly towards camp for a bite to eat so I checked Google Earth and spotted a couple of features in the next door field I wanted to check out and started off.

Gold in the Sand

My new CXT 3030 turned up and I could not wait to get it set up and get down to the beach. Well off I went, the tide was on its way out so I started to detect just above the water mark. I had it in the factory setting until I got used to it. I pulled up a few modern coin up within a few mins then about half an hour in I dug down about 6-7 inches and pulled out a nice 18ct gold ring.

Silver was Jumping Out of the Ground

Recently I was given the heads up from the parks department, about a sports field which was to be renovated. I invited 4 other detectorists to come and enjoy the party. The city had removed 3" of sod and soil prior to tilling sand into it to improve drainage. As a group we recovered 102 pieces of silver while the site was open to us. My take from the field with the CTX 3030 was 50 pieces. Thanks Minelab for making a superior machine. I am having a blast.
