Digging in Disbelief

My buddy Everett brought me to a foundation last year back in the woods and I found my first LC there a 1848 next to the well. At the time I was still using coins mode and the pro coil. He at that time already made about 5 trips to this site with another buddy of his and they both found a total of about 20 coins altogether and a whole slew of other colonial and 19th century artifacts. He thought the place was cleaned out. We went back one more time last year only to find nothing else. We kept saying this year that we have to go back sporting our 12x15 coils and now I'm running in TTF. My buddy uses a Sovereign.

Three E-TRAC's = Five Large Cents

My nephew Paul invited me and his brother Bill to hunt a field site where an old house once stood. My wife Diane was trying out her new X-TERRA 705 and Bill’s young daughter Eloise was there observing. We had been hunting about an hour turning up some old spoons, square nails and typical farm relics when I got a very solid signal. Using my field shovel I turned over the target spot and pinpointed the target, it was a Large Cent, not just any Large Cent but one dated 1818! The condition on this coin was amazing, a beautiful green patina with a full liberty visible. The others gathered round to see my find and Bill’s young daught...

The Right Choice

Woke up on a beautiful Saturday morning then answered the phone to be asked by my usual detecting partner to hit some fields as they were being seeded on the Monday of course I jumped at the chance to try out my brand new E-TRAC which I had not even turned on yet. So I checked the battery loaded my gear into the car and 45 minutes later I was at the site only to be greeted with my friend with a long face, the area to be detected was not available, instead we had to use a ploughed and rolled field that had supposedly been done to death for years by various detectorists and clubs.

A First for Everything

I'm from Niagara Falls, Canada. I just purchased a E-TRAC detector after I read all the good success stories on with Minelab machines. After I received my machine I was excited to test it out, I read over the manual did a few tests in the back yard and went to a spot I found last year just before the snow came. This was my first time out this year and first time I have ever used a Minelab machine, I walked out onto the field and my first signal was a 1880 canadian nickle! It was the oldest coin I ever found but not for long!!!

On Cloud Nine with a Flying Eagle

Today I had no where new to go so I went back to the farm where I dug my 100th Indian last fall... almost winter. This yard gave up a ton of wheats, several silver and a lot of Indians, and a couple V nickels.

A Trifecta of Firsts

Saturday April 9th, 2011, is a day I will not soon forget. It was finally a good day to MD here in the city of Pittburgh, PA. Mostly because of a break in the weather. Spring was on our doorstep and I was dying to step out. One of the oldest parks in the city is West Park on the northside of the city. They called this section of town. Old Allegheny. So being old, that is exactly where I wanted to be with my three week old E-TRAC.

My First Saxon Coin

Went out detecting on one of the farms I have permission on and after digging the usual bullets and shotties for an hour I was heading for cover from the rain and I had another signal which seemed deep so I dug it expecting another bullet but to my surprise was a coin, a saxon coin which a friend put up on detectorist and ukdn for me, a couple of people suggested sending a picture to the early medieval coin corpus which I did and as it turned out I have found a new unpublished and unique coin of Æthelbert II.

Cherished Ring Returned

One of the best moments for a metal detectorist is when he is able to return a lost wedding band to the owner. A week ago a young family ambushed me as I was coming off Skaket Beach on Cape Cod, MA. My Excalibur II was on my shoulder after having done its work. I had just found a nice large sterling necklace and was calling it quits for the night. The wife explained that she had lost her wedding band there the evening before. She asked me if I could help and she showed me the exact area where she said she lost it. I gridded the area three times and told her it absolutely was not there and that she must have lost it somewhere else. I advise...

I recently travelled to Chicago with my hunting buddy to do some water hunting at the beaches there. Within one hour of hitting the water the first day I pulled this heavy 14k gold initial ring(12.1 grams).
