The First Target I Dug

I was hunting an old farm today and this was the FIRST target I dug, I can't believe I dug this in my area of Ohio. A Virginia half penny, it has a clear date of 1773....man I am pumped up!!! I scratched it, sadly because it had roots all over, but right now I am so happy I don't even care. Before this my oldest coin was a undated capped bust dime.

The First of its Kind

On Saturday April 4th I joined Barry Small and The Artifact Detecting Team (ADT) a Minelab Sponsored treasure hunting team. I as a Minelab dealer was asked to represent Minelab at these events. The ADT is the first of its kind in the U.S.A. The ADT is working in conjunction with the Southampton Historical Society. In the past no historical society has ever considered allowing a metal detectorist on a historical site. As you may know many nonprofit organizations are losing their government funding, so Barry thought it would be a good idea if detectorists would be allowed to hunt historical properties for a fee. That fee would in turn be don...

Smooth as...E-TRAC

After six months with the mighty E-TRAC and studying the MinelabTV information movies, emailing Mr Des Dunne and getting as much info together as possible I have now made my own patterns and modes for various sites around the UK. The best little bits of advice I can give as a novice user is to run your E-TRAC on Smooth with Manual sensitivity set at 20 to start with. Noise cancel set to 1 always and volume gain set to 14 and everything else on 30. I run Conduct multi but many run with Ferrous two tone. I tried Ferrous two tone on a site a few weeks ago and look what popped out of the ground!

What a Beauty!

The E-TRAC is my third Minelab machine. I thought my Explorer II could not be beaten but it was. I spent the weekend in North Wales on a site near to a 10th Century Church that was built on an even earlier site. Had a great day with spectacular scenery, peace and quiet, a cold can of Guinness but best of all I found four hammered coins and a Roman Bulla. Three of the coins were Elizabeth 1st and I've found several similar coins in the past. Then, just as I was finishing my Guinness came that lovely clear peep. About a foot down I found the coin that makes it all worthwhile. An Edward 6th Shilling... Fantastic.

A Hunt to Remember

Had a great road trip with my buddy Ray on Thursday. Started it by getting on the road around 6AM and did not get home until after midnight. In that time we got about 9 solid hours of hard detecting at 3 different spots. Besides the fun of hanging out with one of my favorite detecting partners, I managed to pull out quite a few goodies. Broke a personal one day record for Indian head cents and Barber dimes. Even managed to pull out my first V nickel of the season.

Digging in Disbelief

My buddy Everett brought me to a foundation last year back in the woods and I found my first LC there a 1848 next to the well. At the time I was still using coins mode and the pro coil. He at that time already made about 5 trips to this site with another buddy of his and they both found a total of about 20 coins altogether and a whole slew of other colonial and 19th century artifacts. He thought the place was cleaned out. We went back one more time last year only to find nothing else. We kept saying this year that we have to go back sporting our 12x15 coils and now I'm running in TTF. My buddy uses a Sovereign.

Three E-TRAC's = Five Large Cents

My nephew Paul invited me and his brother Bill to hunt a field site where an old house once stood. My wife Diane was trying out her new X-TERRA 705 and Bill’s young daughter Eloise was there observing. We had been hunting about an hour turning up some old spoons, square nails and typical farm relics when I got a very solid signal. Using my field shovel I turned over the target spot and pinpointed the target, it was a Large Cent, not just any Large Cent but one dated 1818! The condition on this coin was amazing, a beautiful green patina with a full liberty visible. The others gathered round to see my find and Bill’s young daught...

The Right Choice

Woke up on a beautiful Saturday morning then answered the phone to be asked by my usual detecting partner to hit some fields as they were being seeded on the Monday of course I jumped at the chance to try out my brand new E-TRAC which I had not even turned on yet. So I checked the battery loaded my gear into the car and 45 minutes later I was at the site only to be greeted with my friend with a long face, the area to be detected was not available, instead we had to use a ploughed and rolled field that had supposedly been done to death for years by various detectorists and clubs.

A First for Everything

I'm from Niagara Falls, Canada. I just purchased a E-TRAC detector after I read all the good success stories on with Minelab machines. After I received my machine I was excited to test it out, I read over the manual did a few tests in the back yard and went to a spot I found last year just before the snow came. This was my first time out this year and first time I have ever used a Minelab machine, I walked out onto the field and my first signal was a 1880 canadian nickle! It was the oldest coin I ever found but not for long!!!
