Learning Fast

Bought a used detector because I couldn't afford a new one. Despite a headphone jack problem, in a half hour I found a penny, 2 beer cans, bottle top, and a staple. Guess it works! I live in an old gold mining town in northern Idaho. So I'm hoping to eventually find at least one gold nugget and some mining relics.

A friend here has been teaching me about using detectors (but he isn't used to mine). He's really been a lot of help. My brother came this last weekend with his coin detector - yeah, he found more than I did, but I found the only nickel and the only ore sample. My detector is more sensitive than his, but he knows how to use his to find c...

I Can Swing it All Day

I was invited to go hunting with a friend at an old church where he had previously found a couple of silver coins and Indian Head pennys. I had recently purchased a Minelab X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack and I thought that it would be a good time to try it out.

I got to the location and got set up. I was able to run the X-TERRA 705 with full sensitivity and was using the 10 x 5 HF coil that was stock on my X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack. I played around with it for a few minutes to get a feel for how the detector was going to act running so hot but there was no problem. I asked my friend if there was an area that he had not had a coil ...

X-TERRA 705 Finds 13.6 gram Gold Nugget

First let me start of by saying I am now a true believer in metal detectors and especially Minelab. I live in southern Arizona and I have been working placer claims in the area for several years. I have spent a lot of money on sluices, high bankers, dry washers, and more, but in all my years I had never considered a metal detector until just recently a friend of mine talked me into buying one.

After a month of research I decided to buy the Minelab X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack. It came highly recommended on many online forums as well as from several dealers that I spoke to. I received my X-TERRA 705 about 2 weeks ago and spen...

One Happy Prospector

Recently I had an opportunity to go to Nome, Alaska and work at a mine 7 miles out from there. I was told there were litterally miles of old tailings on there claims. Since the remoteness and terrain I would be in my choice of detectors to look for gold was the X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack. I know that it is rugged and lightweight to use and packs easily.

The weather was not good upon arrival, wind heavy rains and cold. We worked on equipment and helped around the site. After a couple days we were able to get out and go to the area. As told there were old tailings and roads, an old rail head from Nome ended there also so rel...

Costa Rica Riches
The Envision Festival in Uvita Costa Rica is a gathering of young earthy party people. My wife and I happened to be in the area 3 days after the closing of this yearly festival. We brought out X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack from Canada for this type of moment. For two days we were allowed to sweep the grounds with our 705. There was so much coin in the grass we had a hit every 2nd sweep. Mixed in with the coins were various bits of jewellery, silver earrings, silver ring, brass Buddha, silver necklaces, buttons, broaches, silver beads. The list goes on. It has been one of our best detecting moments ever. Check out concert grounds, festival sites, demonstrat...

Minelab Magic
Thanks for the certificate, cap, and bottle opener much appreciated. The results are from two hunts down at a local beach. It was a cool afternoon so I decided to put in an hour and a half, sometimes I get this vibe when I'm just starting off that it will be a good hunt, and most of the time I get into a different mindset and the goods come up every few metres it’s a great feeling. A few people come up and ask me about the machine I'm using, I tell them it’s a Minelab made in Australia the model and if they are interested I give a bit of a demo with a coin with the backlight on it looks quite impressive especially with the pin...

Mixed Money in Sands
It has been an interesting week on the sands weather wasn't the best for crowds but it's the thrill of the hunt that is a driving force in this hobby. The ring count was down to zero but something interesting in the coin count had happened. I was getting the usual 1&2 dollar coins 50c 20c 10c coins but in this mix I also got a few foreign coins and a bonus if one collects coins. The coins from left to right are as follows, Eire 50p1997, Singapore 50c 1986, Bali with a 10stamped on it, Canada1c 2005 and I am sure there are more of these coins to be found happy hunting....

1884 Gold Coin Worth ~$2,000!
I first got into the hobby of metal detecting when I was a little boy on vacation with my family. I saw a detector for sale in a shop window, it was 1975, and all it did was flash a red light when metal was nearby. I begged my parents to buy it for me and my father arranged to pay for three quarters of the price. Unfortunately, it didn't work for long and I ended up breaking it apart and making something else out of it. My parents never forgot it - but then again, neither did I. Decades later I heard there were gold fields in between where I live and the beaches of Sydney, Australia....
