Unbelievable

At the March 2011 Diggin' in Virginia XVII, I won a Minelab GPX 5000. I could not believe my luck to win such an incredible machine! I used it in the field over the weekend and it was a great experience. With all the talk about the GPX Series, I was going to put it to the test right out of the gate. I went to a spot that has been hunted for Civil War relics for many years. Finds are few and far between, and the land is loaded with junk iron and modern nails.

A Deadly Combination

I was detecting an area close to Stanton ,AZ using my GPX 5000 with 8" Minelab Commander coil. I had been finding sub Gram pieces all morning, I was working some decomposing bedrock, got a faint signal. I dug down 6" and I had it, well I did if I could find it, it was so small I could hardly see it, sub grain size, I put it on the end of my finger and took this picture. I dug up a bullet a few hours later, I was tired and started to kick the dirt back in the hole when I remembered a friends advice: always re-check the hole. I had another bullet signal but decided to dig it anyway. The bullet turned out to be a solid GOLD slug 6DW...

Making Dreams a Reality

Ever since I had started using detectors when I was 19 in the Military I wanted to get my own for hobby use to find some shipwreck coins or treasure on one of the beaches or fields near home in Cornwall England after all I have heard of so many stories of the old wreckers here and such treasures lost here that dreams are made of. I sometimes found coins using my military detector to my great delight. I bought series of detectors over my 7 years in the Army and searched my local beaches finding mostly modern and Victorian coins. When I left the military I bought a Minelab Explorer. My finds drastically improved and I started to find deeper ...

Another Rare Civil War, Confederate Uniform Button

I have been very fortunate in finding some elusive Confederate Military Uniform buttons since I started detecting in NC, and this one is no exception to rarity dug with the amazing GPX 5000, around 13 plus inches deep in heavy red clay! Forget about all the shiny gilt that dressed this button at one time, sadly it's long gone now. It has succumbed to the elements. Hard to see from the photos, but it is indeed listed as 13mm {Albert's SU 272} The design Features a "Don't mess with me" Hornets nest Cool with "NC" on sides on a lined field, and "MILITARY INSTITUTE" around the edge. Some Cadets mann...

8 Ouncer at Nearly 3 Feet Deep

Hi Folks, Just writing to thank you for the Greatest Detector you've so far produced... I refer of course, to the GPX 5000. Having been successful with the following Detectors SD 2000 / SD 2200 / GP 3000 and GPX-4000, I am suitably impressed with the next generation GPX 5000 which runs as smooth as silk and additionally, I have no further need to use a "signal enhancer" which I've needed in the past because of my deafness.

Where the MIners Have Been

Yesterday was my second day out with my new GPX 5000. I went to an area just north of Yuma AZ. An area where there was a lot of drywasher holes, and some evidence of metal detecting. I believe in the old adage, "go where the miners have been". Several of the hillsides at this site had been raked. That told me someone had probably found gold there.

A Whole New Level

While on the Corfe Castle 2010 Minelab Owners rally Gordon Heritage (Ironhearted Gog) and I decided to try the GPX 5000 on the top of the hill. This pasture land is highly mineralised and has been detected for a good ten years, so is a perfect place to test the new machines.

12 Ounces in Less Than 10 Hours

Went detecting with a Minelab GPX 5000, within the first hour we found a 124 gram piece of gold and quartz. Next week went out again and found a 140 gram piece of gold. All told in about nine and a half hours we found 12 ounces of gold.

Found a 1918 Walking Liberty Half

My sister gave me permission to hunt her yard here in the Pittsburgh, PA area USA. Her house was built in the 1930s, I think. Found a bunch of clad a few wheat pennies and this 1918 Walking Liberty Half dollar. Terribly worn, but I don't care, it is my first silver half dollar. The second picture is of a Turkish 2 Piastre coin also found in Pennsylvania, found in the yard of my grandparents house. I have no idea how a Turkish coin made its way to PA.
