Detecting in the Grounds of Cyfartha Castle

I have recently been given sole permission to detect in the grounds surrounding the home of the former powerful Iron Master William Crawshay. He once owned one of the largest iron works in the world.

It was situated in Merthyr Tydfil, my home town. The iron works made everything from Cannons for the fleet commanded by Horatio Nelson to railway lines which were exported all over the world. The castle was built as a home for the Crawshay family in 1825 overlooking the Cyfartha Iron Works. He was a cruel man who had little regard for his workforce.

New CTX 3030 Reveals Old Treasure

The new Minelab CTX 3030 is an amazing detector! I recently upgraded from my E-TRAC to the CTX 3030 and I am LOVING the combined mode. So far this past month or two I've pulled almost 25 silvers already this year, but I had an exceptionally great hunt yesterday.

Me and a friend from my local detecting club took a trip to an old historic haunted hotel which was built in 1812. We were given permission to hunt the surrounding area. It seemed pretty disheartening at first because the site was fairly cleaned out of coins already, but the "hunted out" areas are where I've been noticing the CTX 3030 real...

Buckled Up

I cannot tell you how incredible the CTX 3030 is in Iron……Wait! Yes I can!!!

I live in the country, and I love to hunt older home sites, more than anything else. You just never know what you might find.

I have been looking at an old house for 9 years, wanting to detect it. Then finally, 3 days ago, I noted a backhoe by the house, and the barns behind it were being torn down. This house appeared to be built around 1915 or so, and was on some acreage. Old Oak trees adorn the yard, begging to be searched beneath.

CTX 3030 Maiden Voyage Accomplishes Two Lifetime Detecting Goals

I took my new CTX 3030 out for its maiden voyage Sunday and finished the day having accomplished crossing two goals off my wish list. Having found the nickel variety 3 cent piece in my backyard a couple years ago, I have hoped that sometime throughout my life I would find its matching partner in the silver variety.

As of today, that wish is now crossed off the list! My very first target of the day with my new CTX 3030 and about 3" deep i got a nice hit at 12-32. I start digging and out comes an 1852 Silver 3 cent piece! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it!!!

Silver and Stone

I was hunting an old stage coach stop from the 1850's with my Minelab CTX 3030, when I came across a high tone that I've grown accustomed to love. Upon looking at my detect screen, I saw the 12/41 at 8 inches.

I started digging and pulled the earth out of the hole and laid it on my hunting towel. I pulled out my new Minelab PRO-FIND 25 and started searching thru the dirt on my towel for the hopeful silver coin. I kept hitting this annoying piece of rock.

3 Little Nags

I've been detecting since 1986. Learned how to use a detector as a Police Officer. I've used every detector under the sun except Minelab.

I've been digging this field behind my house since the beginning and aside from a few Mercs and a Barber quarter, I really haven't found too much.

Hammered Site Yields Amazing Buttons

What a day... What a day... What a day... My son was down from Boston to spend a few days with us and celebrate his birthday... I drove him back up on Sunday (April 7th, 2013) morning and headed to a town green that I have detected at on 10 previous occassions.

This location is one city block and I could see fresh plug cuts when I arrived. I have recovered a Mexican 1832 1 Reale, US Revenue Cutter Service Cufflinks ca. 1850 (Formed in 1790 and became the US Coast Guard in 1915), a beautiful 1864 Two Center, many Indian Head Pennies, Barbers/Mercs/Rossies, Musket Balls, and various relics at the location.

CSA Buckle

February 28th, 2013 I was detecting an old late 1800's house site. I had been hunting about 2 hours and found a few interesting finds. Then I got a very good signal. It was a 12-40 at 6 inches.

I dug it and couldn't believe my eyes. A CSA rectangle belt buckle. It is very rare and valuable. I've been detecting for about 5 years and this is by far my best find ever. Thanks Minelab!

A Glint Of Gold

On 2/9/13 it was a bright and clear, but cool Saturday and it will stand out in my memory for a long time.

A friend and I was lucky enough to be able to hunt around a home built in the late 1700’s . This site has been hunted many times by many different detectors. I was not to surprised that most of the finds were very deep. After about an hour of finding a few clad coins and lots of can slaw I got multiple targets on my CTX 3030 screen. There were two targets about three to four inches apart. With my digger I opened the hole and scooped out the dirt and with a pin pointer quickly located a military looking pin ...

Took the CTX 3030 Out For One Heck of a Long Day!

The morning air was cold and damp as I pulled up to my favorite detecting site. A dense fog had settled in all of the low lying areas, and the ground was covered with patches of heavy, wet snow. With my CTX 3030 propped on my shoulder, I headed into the thick woods.

I had been to this site many times before with my trusty E-TRAC. I would spend countless hours wandering about, looking for the telltale signs of former settlements. Be it an old foundation, a set of steps that go from nowhere to nowhere, or a series of pine trees that are arranged in a perfectly straight line. Each one had a story to tell. A story of live...
