If you haven’t experienced the enthusiasm of hunting and finding caches with a metal detector, you don’t know what you’ve been missing.
True, other forms of the treasure hunting hobby give you the exciting joy of discovery and the benefits of relaxation, fresh air and outdoor exercise. But, you’ll find the search for a cache, and the thrill of the hunt, can be almost as rewarding as finding the cache itself. I certainly don’t want you to believe there’s a particular "magic" to cache hunting. It’s just another aspect of the wonderful hobby of seeking treasure with a metal detector. But, always remember, no matter how successful you’ve been at finding coins or jewelry, that cache hunting is different.
Because cache hunting is different, the basic concepts governing it are also different than those of other forms of treasure hunting. Yes, you should remember and follow the basic treasure hunting rules that you have learned over the years. By all means, use those special hunting methods that have proved successful for you and your detector.
As I continue to emphasize in all of my books and articles, basic techniques of metal detecting remain the same because the laws of physics do not change. Whether you can be successful in cache hunting, however, will to a large extent be determined by the manner in which you apply basic techniques and how you utilize the technology of modern detectors. Even though I urge you to trust your experience, I also recommend that you consider these guidelines that have proven successful for many cache hunters.
