1794 Large Penny Sells for $632,500.00!

It only took a few old coins put into a 13 year old youngsters hands to start what turned out to be one of the worlds greatest collection of pennies.

When Walter J Husak received payment in old coins for doing chores at his grandparents property he looked at coins that were unfamiliar to him and his curiosity started him to collect other coins and evidently his love of pennies were what brought him riches.

While a penny saved is a good way to start a coin collection some pennies are far more valuable then others and in a recent auction where Husak’s collection was sold, one 1794 quarter size penny was auctioned for a whopping $632,500.00. And there were three hundred more pennies auctioned to bring the total to $10,700,000.00.

While not everyone may amass a collection of pennies as valuable as those that were auctioned, there are pennies even now available and undiscovered that have values running from $200.00 to $20,000.00 and even higher. A penny saved now can easily mean an unknown value is about to be discovered. And now the hunt for “Super Valuable Pennies” is on. Reports of people buying bags of pennies from banks to sort through them to find valuable pennies. Others are putting out word that they will buy pennies that people have been throwing into drawers or cans, bottles, whatever so that they can sort through those also.

Metal Detectorists, a name given to people using metal detectors to find coins and treasures have been finding valuable coins for well over 50 years. Some detector users state that there are numerous old valuable coins still waiting to be discovered. Proof of this is in the huge numbers of coins located by metal detectors in old abandoned towns and villages as well as areas where people assembled to hear bands playing or speeches given in communities dating back to before the American Revolution. Hardly a month goes by without some valuable coin plucked from the ground by a lucky metal detector enthusiast.

One Kellyco customer found one of the rarest and earliest American pennies known to exist. The "Maryland Penny" found with a Fisher Coin Strike was the seventh known to exist and found only a year ago by a Kellyco customer! Click here to read the entire story and see photos of the penny!
