The Lobo is a "turn on and go" detector, that will satisfy metal detectorists in all types of searches. Even though it's designed to be a nugget-machine, it actually excels on coin-shooting & relic-hunting. The main thing to forget, is to try and adjust too much... Keep the switches in the middle positions, turn the control all the way up, (sens/thresh always as high up as possible!), try not to use the alkali/black sand options, and keep the discrimination as low as possible (preferably not higher then a little over 2, to keep the small silver items within reach)... and then use your ears! If the sound is a pig-like squealing, it's bad news (foil, rust), the smoother and lower sound are normally the coins. I'm European, so I'll hunt for Roman or Celtic coins, bronzes that can be as little as 8 mm (1/4 inch), and this detector will bring them to your attention. The biggest down-side for those used to looking at their screen for ID, is that this detector doesn't have one... you will really have to learn how to understand the different sounds it makes. As soon as you know what to look for, you will find way more than others with fancy digital stuff. As with most detectors, don't run across the fields, keep a slow and steady pace... if not you will miss the best finds that others left behind since it was 'hiding' beside or below a piece of junk. This detector has a brilliant recovery-speed, which you only benefit from if you don't walk too fast.

Regarding coils: This is a choice to be made based on the soil. If the field is pretty clean, use a very large DD - I use the 12x10" - (and expect 8-10" depth). On very metal-infested grounds you should take the standard wide-scan (and you'll lose some depth). How I rate this detector? It's absolutely one of the best around. On very difficult grounds (metal-infested) it kicks the very expensive detectors behind... on clean grounds it still well worth it's money!!

Old Lobo

Review by Jack B on March 11, 2015

I purchased a Tesoro Lobo in 1992. My son-in-law borrowed it one time and it came back with a broken shaft. I taped it together and used it for years until I started going to Arizona for the winter. Since I was close to Prescott I figured I would take the machine into Tesoro and finally have the shaft replaced, that was in 2012. They took the detector, replaced the shaft, updated the machine and tuned it up. When I asked about the charge I was told Tesoro warrants their detectors for life and they mean life, no charge. Last year I took a friend's detector into Tesoro and they did the same thing for him. Where I camp there is a dealer who has been trying to sell me a Minelab and I keep telling him when they offer a lifetime warranty like Tesoro I will think about it, but until then I will stick with Tesoro. Customer service is absolutely fantastic with this company.

Tesoro Lobo

After years of wanting to get into metal detecting I attended the local treasure hunters association meeting. I came away with two things. First ,everyone owns the best machine, and they are all different, and secondly, learning how to set up and properly use the instrument is extremely important. Then I researched online and visited two retail mining equipment stores where they know their stuff. Finally, I interviewed three more people who sell metal detectors. Finally I went to Steve Robertson who has owned 17 detectors, has been detecting for 40 years, and worked at A & B Prospecting Supplies for 13 years. He pointed me to the Tesoro Lobo after demonstrating several other detectors. In the end I ask him what he used and he showed me his Tesoro Lobo behind the seat in his truck. I have been out 5 times detecting with my new Tesoro Lobo and boy am I still learning. I learned it is automatic, turn on and go have fun, and most importantly minimal set up, and the instrument has never lied to me. If it detects something I always find something. I am looking forward to years of fun and am very satisfied with the ease of operation of this equipment.

I have owned several metal detectors since 1989 and have hunted for mostly gold and coins in Arizona and California with all my detectors including Minelab, but I have had the most success with my Lobo and Gold Bug. I have a lot of Gold nuggets but most of them were found with my old Lobo that I still have and will never sell, however I have since sold all my other detectors and only have my Tesoro Lobo now. It is now 25 years old and still going. FYI a friend of mine bought a used Lobo in 1993 and the fiber glass shaft was broken when he stopped short in his Jeep and a water jug smashed it. It was not a defect of the Tesoro and was not covered by the life time warranty. But he sent it to the company for repair and they replaced the shaft, checked it out and sent it back to him NO CHARGE you can't beat that kind of service. True story, his name was Bob Parker from Lake Havasu Arizona - Daniel L. McCarty http://www.rockincherokee.com
