Very Low Frequency (VLF) types of detectors are far today's most popular choice. The VLF name comes from the operation of this detector in the Very Low (radio) Frequency spectrum of 3 to 30 kilohertz.  Most VLF detectors operate no higher than about 15 with the majority operating near 5 kilohertz.  Because VLF's can be designed with circuitry that is not bothered by the disturbing effects of iron minerals (which have a tendency to confuse other signals and falsely indicate metal targets), circuit gain can be made higher; thus, improving sensitivity where smaller targets can now be detected and greatly increasing detection depth.

VLF detectors manufactured in the U.S.A. are controlled by strict regulations which protect the buyer.  Many detectors imported into the U.S. are not regulated and can be very disappointing by reading false signals and lacking depth in spite of the claims to be a VLF detector.
