As
everybody who has dealt with Kellyco knows, all of our employees
and especially our sales staff uses the same metal detectors
we offer for sale. Dennis, a member of the Kellyco Test
Team, submitted the following story.
It was a Monday, my day off, and since the sun was shinning
and the weather report said "continued good weather through
today". I packed my trusty White's
Beachhunter ID metal detector plus my beach shoes
and headed for Daytona Beach, only an hour away. I have hunted
Daytona Beach for years and one of the things I have noticed
is there are always a large amount of coins, rings and other
jewelry to be found day after day regardless of the number
of detectorist hunting the beaches. Being a tourist destination
and a favorite beach destination for those living in Orlando,
Winter Park, Ocoee, and other Central Florida areas, there
are always lost coins, rings and everything else one can think
of being dropped and covered by the sand.
Standing on the boardwalk overlooking the beach, I noticed
that ocean waves were pushing water almost up to the steps
leading to the beach. That meant that the tide would be pulling
out some of the top sand, exposing more targets and hopefully
allowing the detector signals to penetrate deeper. And I proved
to be right. Immediately I got a solid hit - encrusted dime,
another hit - another old silver dime. Then one quarter after
another with pennies having a green patina dating back to
the 1930's and more dimes. By now I had been so busy digging
coins I did not notice that the tide was NOT going out, but
was coming in and the next thing I knew my pants and of course
my sneakers were soaking wet from the waves. Before I had
an opportunity to slosh back to the stairs to get out of the
water, a wave came up behind me and soaked me up to my waist.
I hadn't even changed to my beach sneakers so I had to decide
to either go home or be uncomfortable but still able to detect.
Could anything else go wrong?
There Were 59 Diamonds
Well, since I was wet I decided to sit up on a bench for awhile
letting the sun kind of dry me out, and waited for the tide,
this time, to go out. Didn't take long and I was back on the
beach. After 10 minutes or so and a few more coins
a different sound - I moved some sand with my sneaker
and a glitter, I guess a sparkle reflecting the sunlight got
me down on my hands and knees. Moving sand with both hands
I kept thinking "Could this be?" Was this the possible
"Find of a lifetime" as a large heart shaped piece
of jewelry appeared glistening in the sunlight! A
close examination - WOW!, Diamonds -- Diamonds all over! Quickly
noticed one diamond is missing but there were certainly enough
to make this a great recovery. I held in the palm of my hand
the most beautiful heart shaped earring I had ever seen. The
sun highlighted the diamonds and my hand seemed to glow.
There were 59 diamonds and one empty slot. The earring
was much larger than any I had ever seen before. It originally
looked as if it were a heart shaped pendant that would have
been worn on a chain. But, as luck would have it, that meant
there had to be another earring close by, as earrings do come
in pairs. I now started to swing my White's
Beachhunter detector in wider and wider circles.
I wanted that other earring! I deserved that other earring
after all the years of digging up coins, and more coins and
rings (lots of good ones) I had yet to find an outstanding
valuable piece of jewelry like the heart I had held in my
hand. After an hour I gave up, the other earring was not to
be found. I did find some more coins but mentally I was already
taking the heart to be appraised.
It was a Heartbreaker!
Bad news, my diamonds were not diamonds at all, but synthetic
diamonds, yes fakes! Man, you don't know what a heartbreaker
this was. My find of a lifetime which cost me a pair of sneakers
and a pair of pants ended up being a piece of costume jewelry.
I guess the wife won't be driving her new car and I won't
be taking a treasure hunting vacation to Europe. But....,
I'll be back out tomorrow or next week or whenever, still
having a great time finding treasures, and I know that someday
I really will make that "Find of a Lifetime"
