It was early spring when I decided to go metal detecting.
I went over to New Smyrna Beach for a little fun in the sun.
Boy, was I fooled. The wind was too strong to get much detecting
in. It was like a sandstorm. Still wanting to do some detecting,
I took an old friend up on an offer to hunt on his family
property in the town I was raised in. The property has some
very old home sites down by the St. John's River.
I was hunting with the White's MXT finding a lot of old nails
along with beer cans and shell casings. I then got a weird
tone I could not figure out. So, of course, I dug it up at
about 15 inches deep and much to my surprise, it was like
a time capsule. You never know what treasures you will find
until you dig them up. It had to have been buried for years
from a grandson I would assume because the dates would not
coincide as coming from the grandfather. It was an old tin
can with various items inside. They dated from the late 1800's
to mid 1900's.
Inside the tin was a pair of old pair of wire rim glasses that are
12kt gold, an old pocket watch without the works and the
front glass chipped, a medal of merit from the American Institute
of New York dated 1890 on the back awarded to Williams Mfg.
for the Kimball Engine, a 1930 mercury dime. What was most
unique, to me, was a drawing on parchment paper of 2 birds
in a detailed pictorial calligraphy and scrollwork style.
In the artwork, there was written "LOVE IS CRUEL"
on a ribbon that was held in a beak of one of the birds. This
piece of art dating back to the 1800's. Also found was a cash
account ledger dated October 11th 1886 and an expense account
sheet from late 1800's. I may donate my finds to our local
museum. At least someone may do some research to find out
a little more on where they originated from. (more
