SGT York - location discovered - October 2006 - with the help of a KELLYCO Titan 3000XD
“Châtel Chéhéry, France, 8 October 1918. After his platoon had suffered heavy casualties and 3 other noncommissioned officers had become casualties, Corporal Alvin York assumed command. Fearlessly leading 7 men, he charged with great daring a machinegun nest which was pouring deadly and incessant fire upon his platoon. In this heroic feat the machinegun nest was taken, together with 4 officers and 128 men and several guns.
Alvin York’s incredible heroic accomplishments and faith put him in history as the most famous American soldier in World War One. However, time hid the exact location of where Alvin York accomplished his great feat. It was lost
- until, 88 years later, in October 2006 - we found hard evidence of where this great accomplishment of heroism occurred.
On 21 October 2006, we uncovered the .45 caliber colt automatic pistol
(ACPs) shells fired by York. This find was the result of 700 hours of research in the German and American archives and over 1000 man hours searching. The shells were between 4 -6 inches deep in the forest. We honestly never thought that we would find “the spot.” The Titan 3000XD performed superbly in all types of weather to get us the hard evidence to make this indisputable claim. Interesting to note - I used the money consigned to me from my SGT York article in the September issue of Military History Magazine to purchase the Titan 3000XD.
Our work shall continue. We will construct a SGT York Historic Trail (with local French government approval - still working this)- so that all travelers to the Argonne Forest can walk where York walked.
