Mystery
Treasure Found On Florida Beach!
Beaches
along Florida's treasure coast are well known world-wide for
producing thousands of gold and silver treasure coins from
the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet that wrecked on the coast
during a severe hurricane. Hurricanes are well identified
as playing a primary role in the sinking of many vessels along
the Florida coastline. This year 2005 is no exception:
Earlier
this month Tropical Storm Tammy hovered just offshore Florida's
treasure beaches sending pounding waves onto the beaches and
destroying many sand dunes that have stood protecting
beachfront homes. Driving rains also contributed to much of
the beach erosion leaving behind scoured beaches devoid of
sand. This was the sight that Jamie P. from Orlando, Florida
saw when he walked onto what would become his "Treasure
Beach." Jamie recently read the book "The Beach
Bank" and thought this beach would produce some older
treasures for him. The rain had stopped and the sun was bright
on a cloudless blue sky when Jamie unpacked the TITAN 3000
he recently purchased from The KELLYCO Detector Superstore.
The
incoming tide was surprisingly high with waves crashing very
high on the beach leaving only a small amount of beach between
the dunes and the ocean. After turning on his detector,
Jamie started detecting close to the dunes,
however, the storm had pushed tons of seaweed and other trash
far up the beach where he was searching. Within minutes the
TITAN 3000 sounded off. After clearing seaweed, Jamie dug
down approximately 6 inches and found nothing. Putting the
search coil in the hole to check it the TITAN 3000 signaled
a good target, and it was! Almost 14 inches down, Jamie dug
what appeared to be an old blackened, encrusted disk about
the same size as a U.S. Silver Dollar. Continuing on, Jamie
found a number of other similar disks sized like U.S. Quarters
and Half Dollars. Everything went into his coin pouch.
The finds continued coins from 4 inches to 10 inches
deep, a gold watch, silver ring, and other unidentified items.
Talking to another detectorist from England, also hunting,
Jamie saw two silver spanish treasure coins and two large
emeralds found by the Englishman.
Upon cleaning
the coins, the mystery deepened. Not one coin was American.
There were coins from Canada, England, Germany, Middle East
and many were of unknown origin.
Jamie needs help in identifying what he feels could
be some small treasure hoard. If you have any ideas, please
email us and we will pass it along to Jamie. Jamie says, "You
guys were right when you said the TITAN 3000 is a great metal
detector for the price. Turned out to be even better than
I expected!"

P.S. From The Editor: Seeing what Jamie found with a good
land detector is exciting, however everyone here mentioned
what is probably still under the sand in shallow water. Someone
with any of the new inexpensive land/water/beach detectors
(VIPER - VIPER TRIDENT - Cobra Beach) should be able to really
"clean up."
