A 33-year-old Vietnam veteran who has been prospecting in California's Sierra County for four years has been identified as the finder of a 53-ounce quartz gold nugget on August 7, 1983, the largetst found in the area in many years, according to local oldtimers.

Tim D., who has lived with his wife and two children in the tiny mountain village (population: 100) of Alleghany, said the find will finally give his family the opportunity to live above the poverty level.  "Im going to use the money to buy four years' worth of toys and motorcycles for the whole family," Tim said.  "Maybe we'll be able to live above the poverty level for a while.  My family has been through some tough times the past few years."  Tim made his discovery while dredging in a 3-foot hole.  "I was sucking it out when the side caved in," he said.  "I thought I saw something, so I let the water clear up for a few minutes and there it was."

Unlike many prospectors who remain silent about such discoveries for tax purposes, Tim sat on his front porch and showed the nugget, which filled his open hand, to everyone who came by.  "The whole town knew about it in 15 minutes," he said, adding: "There was no way I couldn't talk about it.  It was too exciting."  Tim values the nugget, which he estimates contains 25 to 30 percent gold, at $11,000 as a collector's piece and said he will sell it to the highest bidder.
