Time Metal Detector User Finds Worlds Largest Pull-Tab!
 Robert
W. of Longwood, FL recently retired and was looking for an
interesting hobby. For years local newspapers have
written articles on treasures being found on Florida beaches,
especially along the east coast known as "Treasure Beach."
T.V. news seems to always have an interesting story of gold
or silver coins being found by metal detector users and local
treasure salvors have had considerable publicity when they
retrieve relics and artifacts in addition to the many Spanish
Escudos and Pieces of Eight. So, Bob decided to become
an amateur treasure hunter.
A
visit to Kellyco Metal Detector Superstore proved to be an
interesting experience. So many metal detectors.
So many choices. What to select? Bob spent time gathering
valuable information on all the different metal detectors
that would fit his needs and budget and walked out with the
new Minelab Sovereign Elite.
Having
a relative in Wabasso, Florida in the heart of the treasure
coast will certainly benefit and on a bright sun shiny day
Bob took his metal detector on the beach and started hunting
for Spanish gold and silver coins that he had heard so much
about. The recent hurricanes had certainly
ripped the beaches all the way to the protective dune lines.
Tons of sand had moved off the beach, so Bob thought his chances
of discovering treasure coins were pretty good. For
some reason he did not get any signals on the sand areas and
decided to go into the shallow water and try his luck. One
of the reasons Bob purchased the Minelab Sovereign Elite was
due to the searchcoil being not only waterproof but submersible.
The
shallow water proved to be the place to be! A solid
hit followed by another even louder sound got Bob digging
furiously and instead of a small coin he found a larger object
requiring much more digging until finally a mass of metal
emerged. The second signal also proved to be much larger than
a coin or even a mass of coins and this target was also recovered
followed by a third signal which he discovered about 20 feet
from the original targets.
Not
knowing what he had discovered, whether the masses of metal
were valuable or not. He took his finds to the local
state museum where they were identified as relics from the
wreck of a ship known as the "Roberts" which was
sunk between 1706 and 1715. Earlier the museum had recovered
the ships bell which identified the wreck and it was precisely
where Bob had been metal detecting.
The
day proved to be a "Once - in - a - lifetime" Adventure.
Many people have detected for years and not made the type
of finds this Newcomer made on his very first day as a detectorist.
