Explorer
2 With EXcelerator 4.5"x7" Coil Finds 1857 Half
Dime!
The
last few days have been perfect detecting weather here in
NW Indiana. I have been trying to squeeze any amount
of detecting that I can get in. On my last short
outing I had an appointment to go to and thought maybe I could
squeeze in a half hour or so of detecting at an old town square
where the appointment was.
I
showed up at the small town park after my appointment and
there wasn't a soul there. It sure always makes detecting
a lot easier without people in the way. I was armed
with my Explorer 2 equipped with the excelerator 4.5x7 coil.
This little coil has proven to be a favorite of mine already. The
conditions were perfect as we had about 2 inches of rain last
week and the ground was still moist. The ground at
this park is extremely mineralized and has a lot of iron pieces
mixed in the soil. It sits next to two sets of
railroad tracks and use to have a train station which
sat right in the middle of the park. I was there for
about 15 minutes and had dug two memorial cents.
My
next signal would be an iffy signal, while hunting
in a discrimination screen of the upper right corner
opened up and the area of Indian pennies and nickels opened
up. The crosshair was bouncing around and giving
me a high tone broken up with a nulling. I switched
to iron mask -15 and could now see and hear that there
were iron tones mixed with this high tone. I figured
I had something here, so I dug a 6 inch plug and
the signal wasn't in the hole any longer.
Breaking
off about an inch of the plug revealed a small disc which
I thought was a button at first. To my surprise
and delight, I was holding my second ever half dime dated
1857! It still amazes me how I can think a place is
hunted out and I make a find like this. I suppose its
true that an area is never really "hunted out".
