Dave in Iowa Finds Rare Civil War Name Plate

I've been metal detecting for 2 years, mainly old yards and private property, with my Whites Prizm 5 and Minelab Explorer SE metal detectors. I was out by myself one afternoon with only my metal detector, a pinpointer and a trowel, deep in the black river sands that I had searched before.

In the past I had made some pretty significant finds at this location.I found a skeleton house key to an old house nearby and an 1898 Barber half dollar, but I knew there was more to be found.

After having searched for two hours and not finding anything significant, I got a good signal. About 8" down I found my favorite find to date - a Civil War button and the name plate for "Captain James Hill" of the Iowa Infantry. Thanks to the local historical society I was able to identify the plate and button from the Civil War era, and I am positive that both were his, since this was his house that he built and lived in. Enjoy the photos of the finds I've made in this area, I'm definitely going back for more!
