JW, Let me first introduce myself. I am the older brother of Randy H. (Digger). As a bit of history we both
have been detecting since about 1971. My first experience was with a rental detector. I rented a Whites Coin Master in Omaha, NE and took
it home to SW Iowa one weekend. Randy I believe still lived at home and we proceeded to look over the old town park. No joking one swath
across this small city park my pockets were bulging with old coins. Lots of silver dimes and old wheat pennies. Randy asked if he could give
it a try and not long after dug a Franklin Half. Well since I had rented the machine guess who got the half. I have never heard the end
of that story. From that day forward we were both hooked on the best hobby known to man. Well just about anyway. If you catch my drift. We
have both had several different detectors.
Randy's first machine was a Jetco, very cheap but we were both quite young and not much cash. I'll never forget him actually wrapping
the detector stem around a tree in Orleans, NE on one of our first hunts. It didn't work as well a the Garrett Money Hunter I had. The Garrett
Groundhog was one of the most memorable machines for both of us. For its time it was a very hot machine for us. Randy actually figured out how to
reverse discriminate which allowed us to dig pennies at a good 7".
One good story took place on Easter weekend in the early 70's. We had both found many Indian pennies in a park in SW Iowa. As
we were getting out of the car to begin our hunt of this special park Randy mentioned that as many Indian pennies that we had
found here, that we have never found a 1908 S Indian. Young an stupid me said, " Indian Pennies didn't have mint marks on them."
Well, he proceeded to tell me that a few were minted in 1908 and 1909 with the S mint mark. In less than an hour I dug a 1909 S with a full
liberty. Hunting with Randy is simply amazing. I even have seen day's he could throw a knife (that's what we use to use to dig with), and where
it would stick in the ground he would upon retrieving the knife find a coin at that spot. Sound crazy but it happened on enough occasions
that we still talk about it to this day. Well I could tell stories on and on, but let me jump forward to 2004.
Christmas of this year Randy gave me an addition for my Minelab Advantage. The 5" Excelerator Coil is greatest thing to date.
I used it yesterday for the first time in an area I have search probably a dozen time before. This area has been a park for over a hundred years and
also gave way to GAR picnic and a County Fair about every year. The problem is that there are so many pull tabs and bottle caps and other trashy items
that on every occasion before yesterday I would get impatient and leave the area after about 15 minutes of hunting. I knew there were old coins in
there but short of digging all of the trash I couldn't get them.
The 5" Excelerator Coil solved the problem. I didn't get rich but managed to pull out 2 silver dimes, 1 Indian penny
1 wheat penny 4 clad quarters, 7 memorial pennies, and 8 clad dimes in a few hours. I am convinced, as Randy and my 15 year old son were not
using the small coil and didn't have near the luck I had.
I found this one with the 5" Excelerator Coil. The others are just a few of the finds in the past year. Check out the 1943
Copper Penny. I about had a heart attack when I realized what it was. After clean-up I still couldn't believe it and checked it with a magnet.
Someone had actually copper plated one of the old steel pennies. What a let down. Also the Silver 3 cent I found last winter. I apologize for the
poor pictures. New camera and haven't got it all figured out yet. Let me know if there is anything story wise or picture wise I can do for you.
