1902 Barber Dime and 1904 Indian Head Penny!

Field Test Area: Ghost Town in Central Florida
Metal Detectors: Garrett ACE 150, 250 and 350

”Well being in Central Florida and with the heat turned on I had a long gone Ghost town in mind to hit first to test out the new coil. I have been to this town a lot with the smaller stock Ace 250 coil and did ok in finds but the sand here can be very soft and I used a bottle probe to check areas. The bottle probe I used is 5 foot in length and in most parts of the location of the town I can sink the probe all the way to the handle, this is not good when looking for items that have possibly sunk deeper then can be found by a metal detector.

Being the persistent guy I'am I don't let that get in the way at all. I have always rehunted the same sites over and over season after season in upstate NY and always made more finds so this is another one of those sites except in Central Florida. I have only found a few coins at this site in past trips and am really hoping that this new coil can help produce. It was a very small and simple town for Florida in those times was rough to exist and Im sure they had many a hard days and nights to say the least. It had roughly about 18 structures consisting of homes, gristmill, church and lumber mill as well as a post office from what I gather.

The Hunt

Well I headed off to the ghost town that existed from the late 1840's through the late 1880's. The town was dismantled and moved to another location about 10 miles away. It was a typical Florida day in August for sure with the temps already in the 90's when I arrived there but I was going digging for sure. Sad part is my 1 gallon water bottle got a leak in it and I didn't notice until I arrived and went to fire up the Ace oh well onto detecting.

Started out within a few minutes of walking in the main roadway I got a good repeatable signal and circled it, hitting in the nickel area and lower tone but nice and solid. I dug down to about 6-7 inches and pulled a nice little round ball, not a bad start. Continued on and pulled up about 6-7 shotgun heads and a few odd pieces of metal.

After about 2hrs into detecting I was over in some shade trees where one of the houses stood and got a nice blurp tone, now it would only repeat from one stance and as I circled It jumped between nickel and penny but was repeatable so I circled it a few times and dug down. Got a nice Barber dime 1902 and a nice IH 1904,both together in the same hole but down about 7-8 inches, this surprised me because I was here with the stock coil on the ACE and probably either passed this signal up! Now these are not the period finds I hoped for but good find non the less. Continued to detect and it just kept getting hotter and hotter and water was about gone so I called it a day. But it was a good day with the new coil and yes I will be back soon.

My Opinion

Out of the box I was surprised at the lightweight of a large coil. I have run many different kinds of Metal detectors with large and small coils and this is the lightest of the largest coils yet. One thing I did notice right away was when connecting it to the lower rod and tightening the bolt it was still to Floppy for me. So I remedied this real fast with another slim rubber washer that can be found at most hardware stores and Wal-Marts. This fixed it up to my liking perfect.

I detected about 3hrs in the 96* Florida heat and had no problem in the tall grass. Pinpointing is perfect and very simple. I would not hesitate to use this coil anyplace-beach or woods it has the coverage and depth along with being a great lightweight coil and very sensitive. More to come in the near future.
